Minimum speed for VSC

I tried to search for the answer but I could not find it.
Is there a minimum speed at which the VSC will engage?

I ask that because this morning we got tons of snow in central Iowa. Roads were very slippery.

I took the 4R 4wd to go to work and just around the block I stopped completely and the pushed the gas as I would have if the road was dry. The car went sideways. More than 90 degrees of the intended angle. No alarm or light came on and there was no cut off of gas either. I made the wheels spin no doubt. How could I do that? (I was in 4hi)

Later about 1 mile away I turned around another corner but this time about 10-15 mph and the whole thing came on, lights, sound and the familiar pulsing of brakes.

Now, if there is a minimum speed you need to travel to receive feedback from the VSC I can understand why the car did that. Otherwise I am clueless. Is it possible that all wheels rotated at the same speed then fooling the computer? Should I thank the dunflops for the semidonut? Is there an inertia sensor in the car or is just a rotational difference and steering angle what the computer use for brake corrections?

Has somebody experienced the same?

Other reasons that I am not aware?

Yes, this has happened to me. I was hoping for one more storm to do some testing.

I would think there is a very very low limit. For example: From my neighborhood, I need to make a right hand turn going up hill to get on a main road. Most times dirt, sand, and rocks collect near the turn and if I cut the wheel very early my rear tires go over the dirt. If I accelerate quickly, I can feel the engine throttling back to keep the rear wheels from spinning. Now this is in 2WD mode, so I'm not sure if 4WD acts differently.
 
on a related note, is there anyway to shut the VSC down short of locking the center diff? I guess the VSC is a good safety feature but some times it's just a PITA.
 
I've noticed the VSC not functioning at very low speeds. I'd say less than 5-10mph. When I leave my house in the morning I typically drive very slow through my neighborhood, and when I take a left from a stop sign I really ease into the gas maybe going only 5 mph at the apex of the turn. If there is snow or ice on the ground sometimes I'll goose it mid-turn and that usually allows me a good oversteer without any VSC interference. Anything faster than 8-10 mph results in the full authority of VSC smacking me on the hands. At low spees sometimes the VSC is a little too aggressive, I'm pretty sure I'm not gonna die if I get a little sideways around a 10 mph corner :p

I too wish there was a way to disable without locking the dif. Like the IS350 ebrake trick. That would be nice.

Yes there is a minimum speed for activation. I *think* it is in the manual. I seem to recall somewhere in the range 10-15km/h.

Similar situation: snow, plenty of ice, just leaving my friends house, rounding a 90 degree turn. Since I was going so slow, I managed to put the tail waaaay out, then overcompensated and did it again the other way! Whooo-hoo! Good thing I am used to rwd vehicles.

UPDATE: Page 148 "...vsc control activates when the vehicle speed is more than 15km/h (9mph)."

The only time you would want to disable the VSC is in some off-road conditions. At what time is it a PITA?

I know what happened with you. I'm in Canada and we have a long winter here. When you're on 2WD, you spin the rear wheels and VSC effects because you front wheels are not spinning in the same way as rear. IN 4WD mode and a lot of snow, all your wheels are spines by your engine. So what's happened is you spin all wheels with about the same speed. VCS uses ABS sensors, but ECU thought you just going fast, not sleeping sideways. As soon as one of your wheels will catch dry pavement and slows ~2% from others VCS will be affective again. Nothing wrong with your system. Just be careful when is too sleepy or try to turn your steering wheel in opposite direction of sliding as fast as possible. This will affect steering wheel sensor and VCS should slow your down.

I was surprised at first moment, but then when I went to an empty parking lot and tried different road conditions there (ice, ice/snow, deep snow, light snow, snow/dry pavement). After it I figured this out - on a deep snow you can fishtail with VCS on, but very gentle to steering, a little bit more and VCS will be activated.

Now... is it illegal to make donuts on beaches?

I bet you could have outrun that f-150. At least it would have not been able to stop you unless shooting your tires!
