Mirror problems and Rear Wipers Stopped

Hi all, I am new here. Just go my 4runner a month ago and I wanted to upgrade it abit. I installed two things in my 03 4runner, a anti glare mirror and the RS3200 Plus. Both have problems so I need some help.

The mirror works, most of the time. In the morning it just comes on when it feels like it, usually a few minutes after I start the engine. At night, when a car comes up behind me the mirror dims but the compass blinks the whole time it is dimming...is this normal?

After I installed the RS3200 Plus alarm, the alarm works fine, but now my rear washer and wiper don't work. Could it be the harness from the alarm or maybe I disturbed a connection. Do any of you know where the wires go for the wiper and washer on the 03?

Any help would be appreciated.

Update...wiper and washer work...

Looks like when you disconnect the battery and then reconnect it, the whole car goes into "reset" mode. I just went out and tried it again and now the wiper and washer work. Actually, I think I had the rear window down a slight bit, which made it not work. Still don't know about the mirror blink though...it is annoying. It doesn't blink the compass direction either, it goes into the "all nodes lit" mode where it looks like a 100 with lines through it.

Could a poor connection cause this?

It doesn't sound like a bad connection, because the mirror does work and it only has one power wire. Sounds like it is a defective mirror.

You might double-check the wiring harness that goes to the back of the mirror to make sure it is tight, though.

Either a bad connection OR you may have connected a wire where it wasn't supposed to go? Did the install involve a lot of splicing? And as already mentioned, maybe you got a bad mirror? Is the sensor on the mirror obscured bya sticker perhaps?

Mirror blinking

There were only two wires to connect, one to a ground screw and one spliced into a switched hot (turns on with key). I tested the mirror yesterday and found that if I cover the front sensor in the day it goes into blinking mode, and if I shine a light at the back sensor at night it goes into blinking mode too. It stops after about 15 seconds, kinda like it is only blinking while it is dimming or undimming (higher load on circuit?). Sometimes it just turns off by itself and then on again.

I am going to re-splice the positive and see if it helps, otherwise I guess it is defective. I do like having the compass though, it is one more reason for me NOT to ask for directions....

Thanks!

Did you order your mirror through Toyota direct or through a private company? I ordered mine through a private company and had a problem where it would not dim. I had the dealer install it for me since they said they would do it for free. I took it back to them and they called the company. They said there is a wire that you have to remove when installing a generic Gentex on Toyota's. They did not tell me anything specific though.

I know that when it gets dark out, the compass display is supposed to dim. When the compass is dim, that means the mirror dims to light. It sounds like it was hooked up wrong, because when you cover the sensor, the mirror responds.

I have a generic Gentex compass mirror and I didn't do anything special. How would the mirrow know I have a Toyota or no? (LOL).

I think there are three possibilities.

1) Check your connections and make sure you have a switched 12v line and not some kind of data line that happens to measure 12v at times.

2) Search for instructions on your particular model of mirror. I know mine needed to be calibrated and set for the correct zone. Does your mirror have the temperature display too? If so, that requires a seperate temperature sensor. If you don't have the sensor, the mirror might need to be programmed to operate correctly without it?

3) Your mirror is defective.

The guy I spoke too did not tell me specifically what he did, but he told me that a wire that was not needed for a Toyota. He said that the reason this wire was there was because this mirror is made for all brands of cars. This is a typical answer from a dealer. It left me scratching my head but the mirror works, so who cares!
