Misfire Problem - Could use some help

I'm not familiar with Techstream. It looks like Toyota specific access to ECU. What does it do for you? How would you use it to pin down this 0301 code? What are any other benefits?

It is specific software just to Toyota, meaning there aren't any parameters or variables it can't cover since it was written for Toyota ECUs. When one uses software from Snap On and ones from other tool trucks as well as Pro/DIY offerings from Autel and Launch, their software may not include everything. I have seen one code reader, costing $1000s not be able to read certain sensor output where as a $500 code reader bought off Amazon did. Speed it also a big factor. In using Techstream the guesswork is taken to zero when working on Toyotas.

If you had access to Tech 2, GM's proprietary software, it may possibly show you more. Your dad's truck wouldn't be an 05 to 07 would it?

It's an '05. But I'm not scanning in OBD2. I just hook up a standalone oscilloscope directly to components.

Gotcha. Oscilloscopes are handy to have, I had one that grew legs.

I hope you aren't going to be in for some head work on his truck thanks in large to Chevy's astute engineers implementing cylinder deactivation from 05 through 07. Helped a friend do such on his 07 last year. Not fun.

Tim better post some pics once he receives his new but old laptop.....
 
Update....

I replaced the AF sensor, but couldn’t get the rear one off - nuts seem to be worn/rusted. I got a Pending code after 8 Miles, which means the CEL will pop in about 5-10 more.

Tim, I guess a techstream test is next? Leak down test?

Oh well. Yeah, let's hook it up to the Tech Stream program and do some more investigating. We could also do the leak down test but I doubt that's your problem.

I just started having an Cylinder 3 misfire this past weekend and currently have mine down waiting on a new set of remanned injectors from Motorwest (thanks to your video). I sincerely hope that replacing the injectors will recitify my issue.

Thanks for doing that video on Greg's truck recently. Lots of good info.

You're welcome. Hopefully we can figure out the source of the misfire. I'm sure we will figure it out but it's going to take time, patience and perseverance to do so.
 
Someone mentioned to make sure the connected cylinder isn't having problems, I second that. Think its number 4...trace the wire from the coil to be sure. Also maybe an intake leak or a small crack in the head or block? That would show on the spark plug. I'd swap everything around to be sure and make sure you're not using autolites or somethin. Ngk or denso. Or maybe its slightly out of time? I'm also pretty sure the 1 cylinder is the last on the fuel rail so checking fuel pressure is also a good idea.

You can do either one. On the Techstream under the "Engine" tab next to the DTC there should be a little "snowflake" symbol and that is Freeze Frame Data which will tell you what the data list was reading when the CEL came on which helps with diag.

Couldn’t get it off. Got 1 nut off, but the other wasn’t gripping. There’s a shield that covers half of the sensor, making it difficult to get anything in there other than a socket. We might end up cutting the shield off to get some pliers in there.
 
I think Tim has some MAP wannabe gas. Heat up the nut for about 25 seconds and try to move.

Then see if his Milwaukee 3/8 ratchet with a swivel socket can fit on there and set the ratchet to tighten. Try for 2 to 5 seconds. The idea is to move the seized material, even if one is tightening it. That may be your ticket.

You could even lower the exhaust and try with his 3/8 Dewalt impact with a flex socket....

1 = 10.5
2 = 11.5
3 = 12.1
4 = 12.1
5 = 12.1
6 = 10.3

All fall within spec of 9 - 14.

Any ideas???

Is it possible to post a screenshot of all the freeze frame data?
 
I have to ask then if you tested the voltage for either one of Tim’s 4runners, as a comparison to your results? Maybe the ECU needs to see at least 11 volts from each cylinder or it triggers a misfire? I don’t know.

Get the rear 02 sensor off?

It's interesting you mention that. That was going to be one of my next things to check. I'm wondering what voltages I come up with on my 2000 4runner.

We haven't got the rear O2 sensor off yet but we will. That stupid heat shield they put on the Tacomas makes it hard to access the nuts. I got one nut off but the other is stripped pretty bad. I think I'm just going to Dremel that heat shield off and then get on the nut with a pair of vise grips or channel locks and spin it off. Will probably use some heat at well with my little butane torch.

I'm also thinking of swapping over all the 3 coil packs and MAF sensor from my rig and then take Greg's rig for a drive and see what happens. The code resurfaces like clock work after around 20 miles so we don't have to go to far to recreate it.
