We don't know if this is a known problem with the Tacomas using this engine or not. I sort of doubt it.

We are wondering though if it would be prudent to pull the engine, replace the crankshaft and then drop the engine back in. I just don't know with an engine with crankshaft play like that could it have caused excessive wear with other parts of the engine like the piston rods. I don't know.

Yeah, my girlfriend has bird feeders all around the house. We have all these cool colored finches everyday at the feeders.

That sucks but at least you know for sure now what the problem is.

Personally, I wouldn't try rebuilding the engine since you are probably right, other components could be compromised. If your going to pull the engine, it will be a lot quicker to swap in a different one than trying to rebuild that one.

You can always pull that engine part at your leisure. I was going to do that with my engine that had a blown HG but decided to scrap it. I just don't have the time for that anymore.

Well Dudes,

It is confirmed! The play we saw in the last video is indeed all crankshaft play. I got Greg back over the house today and we were able to verify without a doubt his engine is screwed.

Bummer to hear! For others at this crossroad, I had an issue where my harmonic balancer was wobbling and squeeking. Turned out that the woodruff key had sheered and the HB was basically free spinning.

Tim that engine is going to have wear on every part of the rotating assembly and cylinders to some degree.
To get by cheap think about replacing thrust washers as mentioned, shows how tough the 5VZ's are, could get lucky and it run for a while.

Wonder if this thread can come back to life? What did he end up doing? I read the whole thing with no real conclusion.

Life got in the way. Moved last summer, when I had planned on doing the swap. Definitely swapping in an engine this summer, as soon as Tim and I can hang out together without any social distancing. I’m leaning towards getting a fully dressed rebuild from Yotashop. We’ll definitely document the swap.
