You're just missing the cover for the shift lock release... the thing that holds your shifter in P if you don't have your key in with your foot on the brake.

Yea... I don't have one in my 4Runner either since I got it back after it was stolen.

To be honest, I'm not too worried about it. Still wonder why it's gone though... (probably the tow truck driver when they flat-bedded it back to Calgary).

the cover for the shift lock release...

If you push in the button, you can shift out of park without pushing on the brake. Also if all your brake lights burn out, you will not be able to shift out of park even pushing in the brake (unless you push that button in).

And if you do find yourself with no brake lights and being stuck in park, check the fuse box under the hood. You probably blew that fuse. I blew mine right after my trailer hitch wiring was installed most likely because of overload. It took me about half hour in the home depot parking lot to figure out why i couldnt shift.

Replaced the 10 fuse with a 15 and never had any more problems.

Yea i know, covering up a bigger problem. I should have finished off the post by saying the real issue behind this was a short on the trailer i was towing. Its just now after posting this that i remember that i forgot to put the ten back in.

No worries! haha.

I've actually got a red button instead of the cover there, only vehicle I've ever seen like that. It's pretty handy when I want to push it forward or back in the garage without running into the house for the keys, the swing out rear spare carrier needs a lot of room to open the hatch.
