Missing EGR Temperature Sensor [3VZ-E]

The 3VZ-E in my 1990 4Runner has a "flying saucer on a pole" looking think mounted just above and behind the power steering pump. I want to say that this is my EGR valve.

Behind the EGR valve, there is a pipe coming off of the exhaust manifold (headers) and going back into the intake manifold. Just before the pipe turns and goes into the intake manifold, there is a little hole with threads wrapped around the inside. On my buddy's 3VZ-E, this hole has some sort of sensor screwed into it, and the other end clips into a connector in the wiring harness.

Is this the EGR Temperature Sensor? Why is mine missing?? lol What sort of problems might be caused by not having it on my truck?
