I recently picked up an 1987 4runner for $850 - I know that's not much, but the transmission is good, engine runs good, 4x4 works, and the frame is straight.
I've been trying to make sense out of the wiring in this thing. Two owners ago, they took out the 22RE engine and put in the 22R engine. In the mean time, they stripped out a ton of electrical systems, re-routed and added an electric fuel pump, and also... physically moved the engine computer? I went to go find the engine computer in the passenger kickpanel, and all I found were the 3 bunches of wires laying there unplugged with no computer in sight.
The tach/mph works (probably not related) and the truck starts right up and drives fine. They also re-routed the original key ignition and added a 2nd key and 2nd key ignition right on the front of the dash plate. It uses a different key (which made me think it was stolen), but they gave me the original key with the car that works the doors too. I also already transferred it into my name and had no issues there, so that all seems fine.
The only conclusion I could draw from all of this was that maybe they were trying to make a "bug out" vehicle in a "**** hits the fan" scenario. I believe they may have been trying to make a truck that could survive an EMP blast?
However, the distributor is still running on electronic ignition... I think, which wouldn't make sense in a SHTF scenario. Below is a picture of it. Also if they switched over to an electronic fuel pump, wouldn't that make it vulnerable to a blast?
I'm trying to make sense of why they went to such an effort to strip out some of the electronics. The air conditioning unit and all wires for it is completely missing too, and I know this thing had stock A/C. It WAS the "loaded" version for this year too.

Sounds like a bunch of goofing around shade tree mechanics going for your typical "good enough" fix.
