Mixing Engine Oil?

Went to the dealership this afternoon and purchased 0W20 Toyota Synthetic engine oil, got 5L and 1L. They run out of 1L bottle and parts guy gave me free Total Quartz 9000 0W20 Synthetic oil.

I know I need 6.5L so essentially I will add .5L of Total Quartz with Toyota Synthetic oil.

Is this OK?

I have heard tales of guys south of the border that mix together every kind of 1/2 quart left over from every other oil change possible and then use that as their new oil for their oil change. They run older vehicles and the things all just keep running.

Extreme example, yes. Like, you wouldn't want 20w50 in a T4R. But you will be fine mixing brands. If I ever had to top my oil off, which I haven't at 98k, I would probably use whatever 0w20 or even 5w30 I had sitting around.

My 4Runner is the newest vehicle I've ever owned. Every other vehicle I owned that was from 1972-2003 production got whatever oil was on sale at the parts store. I never flushed and would keep whatever was left over in the engine bay in case it needed a top off. Not that this is science but I never had issues.

Mixing oil from different brands is fine, just try and make sure you match weight and if you have synthetic to get synthetic.

This will be the most optimal as standard Dino and synthetic has different shearing qualities and the weight operates at different viscosities at different temperatures. But as long as things are getting lubed you would be fine getting by for a bit as having the right amount of oil is better than a lack of it

Yes, I will be adding about .5L TOTAL Quartz 9000 0W20 to 6.0L Toyota Synthetic oil 0W20. So same viscosity, just different brand. Dealership run out of 1L bottle. So they gave me 1 FREE bottle of TOTAL Quartz.

My concern was different brand has different additives.

You should have no issues with the different brands of oil. Believe it or not Toyota oil comes from different oil suppliers. For example my local Toyota dealer uses Castrol in their bulk tanks and Toyota oil in 55 gallon drums. Many times oil companies will often change a formulation or upgrade their oil, because of this you'll have cross mixing of the same weight of oil. This happens more often then you think. You'll never know unless you do oil sampling and testing. I'm aware of this because I sold lubricants for many years. One more thing one oil company can blend oils for several different brands.
