Oops!

I got high centered last week in Moab and my skids made by a friend failed miserably. This is where one was bolted. Any suggestions on a fix? JB Weld seems to be the most frequently mentioned. Opinions/suggestions are welcome!

I have a set of RCI skids that I didn't get on before leaving. :Cry:

Remove them skids, JB weld and put the RCI's on. Component will be protected.

Look for a replacement cover in the mean time.

Edit... Hope you had a good time other than that.
 
JB Weld would be a limp-back-to-civilization fix only.

I would take the T-case out of the vehicle and install a new case half, or have the damaged one welded back together. That would require some Aluminum welding expertise.

Never bolt anything to the relatively fragile aluminum T-case. That was a very poor skid plate design.

The stock little skid plate on the T-case, would only stand up to very minor abuse.

Aftermarket skid plates should only bolt to the frame.
 
I wouldn't consider JB Weld a permanent fix either. It might hold forever, or it might decide to give up at the worst possible time and leave you stranded again. I'd get a junkyard case and swap it out. Keep your old one for parts. Unless you have a friend that's good with welding aluminum, a repair of your existing case is probably not cost effective?

I had a great time and took it pretty easy after doing the damage. :lmao:

I had to pull the lousy skid off to find the leak and got to it today. It wasn't hard to find.

I agree with the poor design now! Besides doing the damage shown a weld on the opposite corner mount also broke.

I'm in agreement on the cost effectiveness of getting it welded being unlikely. I am waiting to hear from a friend that might be able to do it.

I'm not convinced JB Weld wouldn't hold though. I have the RCI skids that will be on after fixing this and see no real need for the little protector that bolts on there. Without anything mounted to it what would stress the repair?

Vibration. Thermal expansion and contraction. Freezy water. Time.

Yeah that seems like a MAJOR design failure with predictable results.

Is this common on other designs or just the one your buddy made?

That what really sucks, I was headed towards Kane Creek and wasn't even on the trail itself. There's a rock obstacle on the left and a sandy drop on the right pretty close to the edge. I don't like sliding off the trail so I decided to go over the rocks instead.

I have to admit I was obviously too casual about it and just got careless. I'll resign myself to a early season mistake that's a good reminder that off road is off road and a guy doesn't have to be on a tough trail to do damage.

BTW, Kane Creek is a fun trail. Here's a pic of my old truck going up the first long climb. We joke that my spotter was blessing my truck.

Yeah, it sucks but such is life. I'll find a used one but am going to patch it until I can replace it.

Just mine that I know of, hopefully this can serve as an alert for anyone else whose are mounted where they shouldn't be. I ran it for years without any issues but look forward to getting my RCI's installed.

Nope. Leave well enough alone. Design evolves overtime. I am sure this would have given the opportunity.

Just find a used one and call it a day.
 
Just about done with this topic but have one more question. Can anyone tell me which year 4Runners have a t-case that I could use with my 2005 V8?

Without being where I can look up compatibility, I'd say a full-time 4wd T-case W/Torsen diff from '03-'09 should work.

I'm about 90% positive that the T-Cases are the same for all years dependant on the engine.
 
You'll want to remove that factory plate anyway. It will sit to close to the RCI plate after installed.
I was getting a vibration/drone sound when I left mine on.
[MENTION=89415]Stuck CAPS[/MENTION]...all part welcome... I still have that plate... You still want it...LOL...
