This is for the 1st and 3rd gen 4runner. I don't know about the 2nd gen 4runner.
I think that the 4th gen 4runner uses the same type of filter but longer. I also have longer filters M1-209 from Mobil and HP-2009 from K&N
How many do you need?

M1-301 is a taller filter so you get another half quart of oil in the system. Plus you have that much more filtration.

I do not have m1-301. I thought m1-209 was the taller version. I might be wrong since you have the car but I've used m1-209 on 3.4L V6 in the past.

We are talking about different engines so may be correct with the M1-209.
I am referring to the 4.0 engine in the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser, they can use the M1-301
