Mobil 1 synthetic oil good for how many miles?

Hi all, I've just switched my 93 4Runner over to Mobil 1 at 125K . I wish i had done it sooner. Anyways the container says it's guaranteed to last up to 15,000 in between oil changes. My question is , is that claim credible or should we take that with a grain of salt. I've never gone that far without an oil change but of course i never used full synthetic before. Also if the oil is good for 15,000 should the filter be changed at the half way point? I'm using K&N filters which were pretty good but would like your opinions. Thanks

With me it's more time vs miles and I don't feel comfortable going over a year with the same oil and I usually change mine at 9000 miles which is about every 10 months for me. If I racked up the miles per month I still wouldn't go past 10k on the M1 syn.

i ususally get non-synthetic, because synthetic oil is thinner, and for for an older machine, the thicker would be less prone to find holes and exploit them.
as for the claims, take marketing for what it is, i'm sure it works for 15,000 on a few of their cars.

I wouldn't go 15k before an oil change, but if you insist, change the oil filter around 7k-8k miles or halfway thru.

agreed. I always thought you should only use synthetic in a brand new car or after a rebuild. changing over to synthetic on a 100k mi motor doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

From what i've read on here I thought people used synthetic in a new engine because they wanted to use the best oil for the engine from the get go and to reduce wear on an engine. Someone also said the synthetic is also thinner but isn't the synthetic less likely to break down and maintain it's viscosity when at high temperatures? If that's the case then when the engine runs hot wouldn't regular oil be thinner? Well i've already got 3,000 miles on the synthetic, do you guys think it can be detrimental to keep driving on the synthetic or should i change it out soon. Thanks

I don't know if I'd say it is detrimental, it is just more costly :)

Synthetic oil isn't thinner in it's weight classification but since it doesn't tend to gunk up once it does find a hole it will tend to continue to leak as with dino oil will harden a little once outside the engine.

Switching over at a little over 100k is no big deal and I know plenty of poeple that have done it with no ill effects. My '97 Runner was switched over at 90k and my '99 was filled with synthetic right at 100k.

I change my oil once a year in the 10k-11k miles I drive which costs me about $30 (do it myself) while the dino oil would require at least two and pretty close to a 3rd oil change in the same time period.

I also like the extra piece of mind the synthetic gives me when I'm pushing my truck/car hard.
I've seen how thick dino oil can get at sub zero temps while synthetic still pours normal at even close to 20 below.

If you don't have cold weather I'd just stick to regular oil and do the standard changes. I live in Canada and have used synthetics in my car because we get -40C in the dead of winter and let's just say the regular oils are bit thick when it's that cold... tough to start and doesn't lube up right away.

If you want to keep with synthetics I doubt you'll ever have any problems besides like said maybe a little more leakage if you have seals going. A good friend of mines dad works with a aircraft company that deals with testing oil on a molecule basis to determine how much metals are in the oil to figure out if the planes need servicing. Basically he has a lab with some cool equipment, and he tests his own oil all the time (M1S) and he's found he can easily go an ungodly amount of miles on his synthetic providing he changes the filter fairly frequently. So basically the oil doesn't really break down or loose it's abilities to lube properly, the filter just fills up to the max and can't remove the particles anymore and they stick with the oil. So change the filter, keep the oil.

OK, so the 4Runner is leaking a little bit somewhere, i will switch back to regular oil when i've put 6,000 miles on it. My question is now that there is that leak line when i switch back to regular oil will it continue to leak because those crevices or leak lines have been compromised by the synthetic oil? Also what weight are you guys using for your 4Runner especially for guys who have older models like mine 1990-1995. Thanks
