Modest AT tire on a Modest budget

Hello all - I've lurked the forum for a couple months now, but haven't posted until now. I bought a gold 2004 4Runner SR5 4x4 w/ 3rd row seating back in October and I love it. I was a Ford guy, went through 2 Explorers - will never drive them again!

The only mod I've done so far are weather tech floor liners throughout, they are a very nice mod. Goes a long way in Jersey with all the rain/sleet/snow we get here. I have some money saved up, and I'm ready to upgrade tires. I have a DS 2.5/1/5 spacer lift ready to install, and plan on doing so after I get tires.

This is my daily driver and most of the driving will be on road, but I want a more aggressive tire that will be quiet enough on highway, servicable in the snow, and hold its own off road. Would I love BFG ATs or Duratracs? Sure, but I can't justify droping $1,000 on tires right now. I've looked at a ton of different tires, searched the forum, and been through pretty much every page in the lift/tire thread. I think I've narrowed it down to 3 options, all 265/70/r17:

BFG Rugged Terrain, Nitto Terra Grappler, or General Grabber AT2

I can get all 3 of those tires on Tire Buyer for $155-$160 each, which is where I want to be.

What kind of experience have you had with any of these tires?
Is there any other tires I should consider looking at?

I have the Duratracs, performed great in this recent snow/ice storm we're having. I knew someone with the Grabber AT2 on a Jeep Cherokee, they look pretty aggressive too; probably the most aggressive out of the three you listed.

Yes, there are plenty of these threads already. I'd personally say go with the Terra Grapplers, as I've never heard anything bad about them. I, personally, have only had my Cooper Discoverer A/T's (and one A/T3 after my tire got slashed), and I'm not displeased by them.
 
my best advice to you, as ive been in this situation before is not too cheap out on tires. Buy the ones you really want because if you dont, you will buy one of the above mentioned and when they dont live up to your expectations you will look back and say " i spent 500$ on these tires and they didnt do this or didnt last that long" and then right after say "i should have just spent the extra 500$ and got the all terrains or duratracs."

Now dont get me wrong im not saying the general grabbers or new rugged trails are bad tires by any stretch...tire manufacturer have gotten pretty good its pretty hard to buy a "bad" tire nowadays.

IMO i would go for the new design rugged trail or the terra grapplers. If they are the old style rugged trails id then put the generals ahead of them. My dad had terra grapplers on his F150 and while they were good, they wore out awfully fast considering his driving style.
 
cooper atp (discount tire exclusive) cheap, 60k mile warranty and been very good on snow and ice for me. were around 550 shiped for 265 75 16 so a bit more in your case
 
I would second not going to cheap, but most recognizable brands dont make a "bad" tire.

That said I just got a set of BFGoodrich Rugged Terrains in 265/65/18 and they have been 100% great so far.

I have also run Nitto TG's in 265/70/17, also seemed fine, but I didn't care for them as much aesthetically.
 
I say terra grapplers or at2's. A wheeling buddy has at2's and they are a great all around tire. Also check out dueler at's and yoko at's.
 
There's a lot of good tires and tire companies. For truck tires I personally like Coopers. But I'm not going to say other tires are bad. Buy what ever good tires you can at the best price. You won't go wrong.
 
The cooper at3 is a nice AT tire and affordable. Nitto terra grappler is another nice AT option. Cooper runs some good rebates. Skip cheap generic branded tires.
 
Thanks for all the replies. The Cooper AT3 is a nice tire, that is going for $163 each on discount tire. I think I'm between those, the Nittos, followed by the BFG now. If I wasn't such a planner and analyzer, I would have pulled the trigger by now...

An unfortunate problem with threads like this is that you get a recommendation for almost every tire on the market. I've personally had the Yokohama Geolander ATS on my old vehicle and thought it was a good tire. When they wore out, I replaced them with the General Grabber AT2's which were very loud. I traded that vehicle in before getting to see how they wore, but I've heard negative things about them warping before you get through the tire's life expectancy.

On the 4Runner I was undecided between the Nitto TG's and BFG's. I feared the BFG's would be too loud, like the Grabbers, but (in my mind) the Nittos were untested. My tire guy recommended the Toyo Open COuntry AT IIs and I could not be happier. I believe that Toyo makes the Nittos, so if you're set on one of those brands, I'd choose the Nitto for price and road manners. I know a lot of people here have had them and seem to like them pretty well.
