I just went on a two thousand mile trip from Tahoe to Bozeman. It was a very fun trip in my 4Runner. Truck never missed a beat.
My computer calculated MPG was 21.0 the whole trip. On the way up, we had to blast the AC, and we hand-calculated a steady 19.2 MPG. On the way back, due to weather, we didn't use the AC. We calculated 20.5 MPG for the return trip. As far as speed is concerned, for the vast majority of the trip we had the cruise control set at 77-78 MPH. I have 265/70/17 Michelin MS2 tires, so the actual speed was probably a touch over 80 MPH. Not great gas milage, but better than a lot of other's 4Runners I've seen posted. Mine is an '04 SR5 V6 with 142,000.
FWIW, I love these tires. They're still relatively new, but once I drive them in the snow I'll post a review. They're terrific in the rain, they're smooth, quiet, and handle great.
Ok, on to my question. We hit an animal through Yellowstone at 3:00 in the morning. We were driving very safe. Just one of those unfortunate incidents. Please don't take this morbidly, but, speaking objectively, the 4Runner did very well in the experience. Swerved safely, maintained control throughout, and kept its alignment despite impact. However, the passenger inner fender (where the impact took place) was torn. It dangled onto the tire, so we had to cut it off. Everything else checked out just fine. Anybody have any idea how hard it is to replace. I found this:
