More noob questions. Looking for reassurance.

Sorry for sounding ridiculous guys, but as I have mentioned in other posts I am not used to Yotas and I want to make sure I do everything I can to take care of my "new" truck. Been reading this forum for days now, learned a TON but still have some confusion. Sorry if these are repeats, I've tried finding everything on my own but I may have missed some things. All these questions are for my '04 V6 SR5.

- 4x4 system. I checked it before I signed the papers based on what I learned here. 4 high, 4 low and center diff all flashed then went solid green. No beeping. This DOES mean the actuator is not seized, right? Reason I am a little worried is because this morning on my way to work I engaged 4 high and it went right in, but there was no extra noise or anything. Not what I am used to (Hey, gimmee a break, I've driven a Cherokee for a long time lol). The system KNOWS when it is engaged, right? I just want to be absolutely certain.

I have looked underneath several times and it's obvious that the dealer didnt clean it which is GREAT, lets me see things as they really are. Bone dry by the tranny, t-case and the oil pan. Makes me feel good about it but want to be extra certain I can trust the computer when it tells me 4wd is engaged.

- Oil. What do you guys advise? I have no idea what was used in this thing. It has always been my understanding that if synthetic hasnt been used the life of the vehicle, switching at high mileage is unwise since it can clean gunk out that's actually keeping things sealed up. Is there a consensus on what's best to use overall if we dont know what has previously been used? Again I may be overthinking it based on my experience with my Cherokee 4.0.

- Other general/preventative maintenance? There's a great tip in one of the threads I read about the bearing in the belt tensioner pulley. Great to know about this $10 insurance policy, I would have had no idea to change this or that they were prone to seizure had I not read it. Any other little tips like that to look out for with these 4runners or little inexpensive things that can save a lot of grief down the road?

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can give more detail, but, for 4WD, I believe the main concern with the actuator is that it will go into low range. You will definitely know when you're in low range. With four-high, if the light was steady you should have been good there.
I think the type of oil will most likely depend on the mileage. I personally don't have any direct experience moving from an unknown to synthetic at a higher mileage.
For other maintenance, I'd highly recommend changing the gear oil in the differentials and transfer case. Also, hit your driveline zerks with some fresh grease.

Just took it out to work the t-case. Still feels really weird to me that 4 hi is silent! But it definitely works, and it was absolutely in 4 lo. I know I know, probably just being paranoid.

Yes, usually shifts to 4hi are seamless and quiet. Even running it in 4hi on the highway is just as quiet. Don't know why other MFGs haven't figured out how to do that. The t-case in my 2012 F150 sounds like it is going to explode when it goes to 4hi. 4low and the center diff lock are the major concerns with these 4th gens. Sounds like yours works fine.

Yeah, it's nice that it's so quiet but it will take some getting used to. Never had another vehicle like that.

If your motor has gunk keeping the seals sealed, then it's got sludge other places too, and wouldn't you want to know about that sooner rather than later? If you want to switch to syn, switch to syn, and if you develop leaks then you know you had some seals that were going bad anyway.

I'm a noob too. Tell me more about the belt tensioner bearing. Do you have a link to the thread? I just bought an 05 Sport V8.

Cant find it now, but it wont apply to your V8 anyway I dont think. Apparently, the bearing in the serpentine belt tensioner will eventually seize, and the part is like $10 and easy to replace. Best to do it before it seizes up. Maybe it DOES apply to your V8 but since the one I ended up buying is a V6 I didnt pay as much attention. Congrats on the new truck!

You've read about the timing belt on your engine, right? Replacement every 90k or you're asking for trouble.

FTFY. Synthetic is a lower viscosity, making leaks more apparent. It won't, however, cause leaks.

Silent 4wd...

Sometimes I can feel/hear a very faint "bump" when going from 2wd to 4wd. I only notice it when I'm at very low speeds. If I'm going faster than about 25 mph I don't notice it at all.
