More tie down upgrades - write up

I've continued on with my quest to add or improve tie downs in the back cargo area. After my last project to add tie downs where they didn't exist before:

Materials:
Tie downs:
I utilized tie downs left over from my previous install since they'd match, they were "free," and they perform well - The D-ring area is about an inch, they are solid, and importantly - the D-Ring doesn't rattle. They are the Hipiwe Kayak Tie Downs (pic below)

Screws:
You'll need longer screws. The size is m6 50mm (according to nglayton the length isn't critical as there is space behind the pillar). I selected a phillips and tapered head to match my other screws and fit the tie downs, which are inset. (pic below - the screw closest to the square is the OEM screw).

Spacers:
I utilized a spacer to give extra support to the tie down. Nglayton used a metal spacer on hand - I needed to buy some and the local home depot only offered nylon ones. However, they also didn't have the right combo of diameter and length, so I went with 1" spacers with the correct inside diameter and then just cut them down to 3/4". They are a bit narrower than the hole, but hefty enough they will provide support

Washer:
I utilized 3/4" outside diameter washers I had laying around.

After this upgrade I'm up to 10 total D-ring tie downs in the cargo area:

4 OEM D rings on the floor
2 New D rings in the side panel below the windows
2 Converted tie downs (coat hooks) to D rings on the ceiling
2 Converted tie downs (T-hooks) to D rings on the rear corner posts

Thanks for that. I just installed a Rago modular panel on the passenger side last week. I was just thinking a couple days ago about what I could do along these lines on the drivers side.

I'm glad you found it helpful.

One more idea for you is to use the FJ side panel strikers (Part #58460-35012) for the drivers side AND attach them to the outside of your Rago modular storage panel bolt in points on the passenger side.

The downside to these are they expensive - about $16 each list from the dealer. You can find them online for about $11. Also there is an ever so slight curve to the mounting plate on these. I doubt it would be an issue, but just a call out. If you're interested in a pic of the curve, let me know and I'll pull one off and snap a shot for you. I installed these in place of the plastic coat hooks toward the ceiling.

I've got gobs of d-ring mounts stocked up from trying different things with my SSO roof rack. I think I'm good for those, but thanks for the suggestion. I even used some Lowe's picture hangar D-rings a couple years ago to setup my rod holder straps on the ceiling.

This is definitely something I need to look into. I don't understand manufacturers putting plastic hooks and crappy connectors in a cargo area... Soccer Balls can break these things the way I drive.

I cheated and ordered the Raingler Barrier Install hardware kit. Painted a washer black to "fill in" the hole.
