Morimot hd harness necessary?

I'm installing the hid kit from retrofit source and it came with an HD harness so it can draw power from the battery. Is it necessary to install or do the headlight plugs provide enough power?

Also is there a write up on how to install them. I get how it goes in but could use some tips on ballast and harness mounting locations

Morimoto harness: Yes, install it. The harness and supplied relays ensure you don't fry your factory wiring. So no, don't install WITHOUT it.

Write-ups: Nope. It's very easy to connect and mount them.

To give you an idea where I mounted my ballasts (Densos):

Driver's side. I mounted it right on the headlight assembly:

Passenger side: Mounted on the passenger side (look upper left corner.... silver box)

Morimoto makes a good product and TRS doesn't sell crap. Good to go! :thumb3:

I searched this forum before I installed my morimoto sets and I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether or not relays were needed. I get that they help with firing and startup, and I get they draw enough power from the battery to start the ballasts, but I read a lot of people just using the factory harness and nothing else. I figured that a 35w ballast would draw less power than the factory harness.

Nevertheless I installed them anyway but didn't connect them just yet.

Because HIDs draw LESS than the stock bulbs, in theory your factory wiring is fine and will work. However, at startup, ballast draw a ton of amperage, something the stock wiring isn't designed to handle. It's cheap insurance (wiring harnesses and relays are NOT expensive) and will provide correct electrical operation. Why NOT install it?? :shrug:

Definitive answer: NO, you do not need to use a upgraded relay harness. i have quad bi xenon with 55w ballasts. no need for relay pack. i use relay back for vehicles with flickering issues.

from my reading only some ballasts may be drawing more amps than oem, thats coming from a old his ballast that was used in this trial.

why not install the harness? its more wires under the hood and creates a mess with unnecessary wiring

I had serious electrical issues running hid ballasts in my 03 without a relay harness. I run harnesses on both my cars, makes everything run a lot smoother

its interesting that the Expert has no problems, yet the Novice had serious ones int the same type of vehicle

I did my last retro 2 weeks ago. I don't know how that's relevant to this conversation but I'll play along. I did my last train horn installation yesterday, my first one 12 years ago. I'm fixing a botched hid install that someone else did on a Lexus es 350 right now. None of this is relevant to the op, lol, and I know I'm still a noobie

Yes, you are a novice If you can't install a hid kit into a 4 runner with out having issues and needing a relay harness. I call it as I see it. I got 4 55 watt hids on my oem harness with no relay packs. No problems.

Don't get mad at me for calling you a novice. It's not a bad thing coming from me, I don't expect you to be on expert level. To me novice is a level below expert. It's beginner, diy so called expert, novice then expert that does this stuff day in and day out. the pnp kit could have been the issue. Not all kits are created equal. Some are power hogs that will blow a 40 amp fuse in 3 minutes and some with be fine with a 15 amp all day long.

Since you just finished a retro 2 weeks ago, yes you are pro now. Pictures or it never happened lol.

I'm not running a morimoto kit but the one I have is basically hardwired straight to the factory headlight line. No relays, no direct connection to the battery, nothing. 4 years now without any problems.

Thanks for all the help guys!! did you just use double sided tape for the ballast mounts? is that enough to hold it securely?

I used double side 3M tape for both. I removed them about a year ago to pot them (still look clean and new). Anyway, 1 year later, still good to go (nice and firm installation).
