Morimoto Elite HID install

I plan on installing my HID kit on my next day off. I like to research and plan in advance to limit the surprises. I've been searching and can not find a complete "how to" for this. I saw [MENTION=103267]Saker[/MENTION] and [MENTION=106306]TEQ.FZJ[/MENTION] (some pictures missing) both did a decent write up but I've never done this before and was hoping for a more complete write up. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.

Are you putting a HID projector in? Or are you just plugging in a HID bulb with the goodies?

Stock projector, just using what the kit came with.

Aren't all these HID kits pretty much plug-n-play? Unless you're doing a full retrokit.

for the 2014+ models

1. take off dust caps, drill 1-1/4" holes.
2. remove stock bulbs
3. loop hid harness through the holes in dust cap, plug in HID bulbs. put back dust cap
4. connect harness to ballast. might need to reverse the plug due to reverse polarity
5. hide ballast in the slot under the plastic lining on top of the fenders.
6. clean up the wiring with zip-ties

Stock projector, just using what the kit came with.

I would recommend against it. But at least it is better then a reflector housing. You are going to get some stray light by using the projector housing.

But since it is your truck and you are going to do it. Unplug the old bulbs and then plug the provided harness in. Wire it up accordingly and you should be good to go. Probably will have a positive and negative wire to connect as well.

I had the volt 4300K installed in my 2014. Much better and brighter than stock halogen. You will need to re-aim the lights though. Take off the top plastic cover and you will see two knobs on top of the headlights. Take a small screwdriver or an 8mm wrench and go counter clockwise to lower your aim.

You don't have to. I just did it cause I was lazy have to snake the wires through.

On the 14's you use a #2 Philips screwdriver and turn it clockwise to lower your aim.....

Definitely do not drill on 14-15, it is much more work. You can just pull out the stock rubber stopper on the bottom of the headlight housing (follow the wires from the bulb, it should be visible with the housing lid off) and replace the stock rubber stopper with the one supplied in the kit (they are the same size). The kit will have two extra wires running through the stopper, one red and one black, you don't need these so I removed them and filled the holes with silicone to prevent water from getting into the housing.

Gonna hijack this, but a somewhat related question, how difficult would it be to replace the clear lens in the stock projector?

I have the xenon depot xtreme hid kit, and the supplied rubber grommet did not fit the stock bottom one on the 14-15 projectors headlights. I was bummed bc I wanted stock look setup. Go with the morimtos kits for a stock wiring look. However, xenon depot is the only reputiable place that sells hid kits with true Philips hid bulbs. I had to drill a hole through my dust cap cover, but if I really want to go back to stock thoses dustcaps from he dealership only cost like 10 bucks each.

All depending on if you have that drill bit......

If you do.... "not much work".....

If you don't, you would have to go to work, make some money, run to the hardware store, buy a drill, buy the bit, come home and drill it...... and that's definitely "a lot more work"!

Personally, I'd have to disagree. I have seen both side-by-side, installed in the same vehicle.

But at this point, it just come down to personal preference. TRS and XD are probably the 2 top vendor/products. Just like iOS and Android. No point arguing.

BTW, IMO again, true Philips 4300K bulbs seems to be the best performing/balanced HID bulb; particularly after the initial "burn in" time (ie. the color shifting.)

If I have a choice, I would do TRS Morimoto system, with XD's Philips bulbs. That's probably will be the "best of the best" out there.

Wondering if you got it done and what did you go with? Not done this before as well so want to be extra cautious! I have a 2014 Limited and looking to replace the halogen bulbs with HIDs as well and just started looking into this. I opened the housing to check out the connections. I would prefer not to drill the covers, so based on what I read here, it sounds like the kit from TRS works better for that? Thanks

[MENTION=118816]xpress[/MENTION] I went with the Elite kit from TRS. I'm very happy with it. I was mind ****ed by the install so I paid a local shop to do it. They did a great job and it's a very clean install. They did not drill my covers but I haven't bothered to look and see how they did it. I put up a few pics in my build thread.

I was like you before, until I found that the headlamp socket cover is only $10 each (Toyota OEM Headlamp Socket cover: 81135-24160); then I just drilled away. The grommet that came with the kit really provides great seal, so after considered multiple other ways to do it, drilling the cover seems to be the best approach. IMO.
