Most efficient speed on the highway, what will give me the best economy on the highwa

Hi, i have a 2nd Gen 4Runner (1992) and im getting about 6km/s per 1Litre of petrol (about 16 miles per 1 Gallon). I don't drive it hard, but it does use a lot of gas



and I was wondiering,

1. if its possible to get better fuel economy?

2. what is the optimum speed/ most efficient speed on the highway?

See airbox maint. thread...it kind of spun off to mileage and modifications, but see what everyone else is doing for mileage

50-55. The slower you go in the highest gear will get to the best mileage.

It also has a lot to do with throttle position.

I guess I should have just answered the question...I personally don't drive the truck hard (more like grandma), use the cruise religiously, and generally don't see speeds over 60. I'm on a personal quest for fuel mileage, not to build a mosh truck...so my modifications are pointed in a different direction than most.

Yup. It's harder to hypermile in an automatic, but your lowest possible RPM without lugging in your highest gear is what will get you your best possible MPG.

16MPG is on the low side of average, though. If I pay lots of attention to even acceleration and timing streetlights, and keep it under 55 on the freeway, I can pull 19-20 MPG.

Going about 55-60 on 2 lane highways across Utah and Colorado I was averaging about 18-20 mpg, and this was with the truck loaded to the gills.

Just try to keep the RPM's around 2000 using whatever gear you need for whatever speed you're traveling.
