Motor ideas

As you know, my 22re isn't doing so good. For those of you who don't know, my engine burns through one quart of oil every 500 miles, it has between 155 and 170 psi in each cylinder with the lowest psi in the #1 and ascending pressure towards the rear of the motor. The #1 cylinder doesn't hold any pressure based on a leak down test. The engine is overall gutless due to its bad health. Too bad, it only has about 8,000-10,000 miles on it. I won't know for sure until I tear the engine down but I am assuming that the machinist who did my block didn't bore the cylinders very good.

I have thrown around ideas of building another 22re, swapping in a 7mge or a 5vz-fe. Let's say that my budget is $3,000. What motor would you use and why?

I'm leaning more towards the 7mge because it puts out the same power (less 20ft/lbs of tq) as the 5vz but is more of a bolt on application than the 5vz.

Edit: Nate and BV: I'm not putting anything other than a toyota in it so don't even suggest a Chevy :D

I like my 22re, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I dream of a little more horsepower. Go for the 3.4 and don't look back - it's as reliable as the 22re, it's a well documented swap, and performance mods abound.

Buy that $2000 3rd gen in the classifieds right now - keep the elocker axle and the motor and trans parts you need for the swap, part out the rest to defray your costs.

I saw that and got excited for a second. But the fact that it's 1400 miles away kind of kills the deal. I am not sure if I want to ship a vehicle for this project. I bet that shipping would be at least $1,000.

I vote a 4.3 vortec or a supercharged Buick 3.8..... Hey, you didnt say my name.

:snacker:

I have two ideas on keeping it Toyota if you must.

3.4, Obviously a great powerplant with proven liability and performance with the ability to be built up easily.

Or buy a $300 stock 22re, and and put the rest of the budget in to solid axle/gears..

All this blasphemy aside, I would also say rebuild the 22re and save the money for gears and lockers.

Odds are, that is what is going to happen. I can get a junk 22re for $100-$200, then machine work for $300-$400 and another $200 for a rebuild kit. $800 will give me a fresh new motor that will hopefully last must more than 10k miles.

But right now I can dream and weight my options... right?

dude i was thinking when i rebuild engines there is always metal shavings between the 5 oil changes before 3000miles
i wouldnt count it out yet, keep driving and break it it then make your mind up if it blows or lasts till 250k miles.

If you could I would do the 3.4 swap. You will love the power and easy maintenance in the long run

I'm well beyond the 3000 mile mark. I have also dropped the oil pan a few times trying to get the oil pan to seal. At about 5000 miles I dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out. There weren't any metal shavings in it then. I finally broke down and bought the FIPG and haven't had any leaks in the oil pan since.

Well if you decide to man up, you can mark me on this. I will have Toyota or Toyota related engraved on chevy valve covers v6 or v8 and send them to you. Since you have no balls im really not sweating it.

Anyone bore a 22re to .040 or .060? LCEPerformance has a kit that has .040 or .060 pistons. That way if the block can be bored, then I can use the 40 or 60 pistons. Since my block is already decked and in good shape (minus the cylinder walls), I could save a bit of money by ordering the LCE economy kit with 40 or 60 over pistons.

I like the 7m route...but if I were doing it I'd go 7mgte that's if I had the money lol...if my motor goes another 3.0 goes back in lol..

Don't worry, I won't suggest a Chevy...how about a Ford or Dodge V8? (just kidding!) I think I would go with those suggesting the 3.4, although I don't know the true costs involved. It sounds like a proven, well-documented swap, and it's a good engine FROM TOYOTA, so guys like T?@/7 won't have to make a new voodoo doll in your likeness (LOL).

Dude, the 3.8L supercharged they put in the Grand National... Talk about some major balls. I've met guys who have put them in jeeps, a ranger, and an s-10, and they push anywhere from 250-600 hp. The s-10 is 620hp but it's twin turbo'd with 18" slicks in the back haha. People like them because of their size.

As of right now unless I find something totally beyond repair, I'm sticking with the 22re. If I don't have to dip into the bottom end of the block then the costs of repair shouldn't be any more than $250 as long as the head and bottom end is good.

I just shoved a 22re back in mine. I had to source a new block and head. I'd stick with the 22re too if you wanna keep the cost down. If i had the time and money i would have liked to do a 7MGE swap.

This is the route I took. Bought a 22re on craigers for 200 complete, put about another 1000 into it (new head, pistons, block bored, etc). Did the swap, and I have about 5k on my motor and couldnt be happier. And that's with 5 29s with 35s. I was going to let this tie me over until I decided to do a 3.4 swap, but now I don't find it necessary.
