I'm curious about this too. 1st gens were 4.10s and 4.30s, I thought 2nd gens were 4.10 and 4.56's.

the 4.88's didnt come in 5 speeds. they came in (not all but some) autos with a tow package and the spare tire rack on the back. go google it... haha

2nd Gens were all over the map. 4.10 and 4.56 for 5 speeds, 4.56 with the towing package.
4.30 and 4.88 for the autos, 4.88 for the towing package.
When I buy thirds, I try not to go by the color code, I have almost gotten bit by that. Someone swapped out the R and P and pretty sure they won't redo the color on them. If you can count the teeth on the ring and pinion, and then divide.
Color code method: toyota painted the Pinion end from the factory:
4.10: Pink
4.30: Blue
4.56: Yellow
4.88: White

410: G292/G294 (2 pinion vs 4 pinion)
430: G282/G284
456: G254
488: G144
Counting the Teeth Method
410: 41(r)/10(p)
430: 43(r)/10(p)
456: 41(r)/9(p)
488: 39(r)/8(p)
If you do end up figuring out your motor is toast, going to 3.4 is getting easier, seeing as the knowledge base to wire it up is more available. You also have very little parts to buy in terms of making this happen. If you can get access to a 5 speed 3rd gen as your donor, jump on it, it makes for a couple less hoops to jump through.

if you could buy the wrecked runner for 300 and the 3.4 runs......... why wouldn't you???? you could sell the motor for 3x's that, or do your motor swap for stupid cheap!
X2. 3.4 swap kits up here are running in the $1500 range. To get an entire vehicle to pick out of, then sell off extra parts to make money back on for $300 is a no brainer.
