Mounting VIAIR 2.5 Tank... Possible option? Okki...

I have been in communication with Okki briefly about this subject. He has been brain storming on locations for a large compressor tank to mount as well as I.

I came across this idea today.... It would be to mount the 2.5 gallon tank within the driver's side wheel well. There is mountain's of room within this space and nothing really obstructing a nice easy mount. The only draw back is making sure that there is EASY access to the pressure release valve and drain valve, plus the plumbing side etc...

I was thinking and depending on what the general consensus thought of mounting it there, was to make an easy way to open the inner fender well (from above the tire) and choosing different hardware to what currently is there so that one could easily reach in and access all areas of the tank without having to remove the whole front quarter panel which is a PTA (pain in the A**)

So what do you think? Am I barking mad or an Einstein in the making ;):?

Here is a ROUGH sketch:

Why would you need to access it often? From the looks of the pic, just install a remote drain and you're good.

Your right, I wouldn't need to access it to often. It would be mainly to drain the tank and check on fitting's. What I should have said was to make sure that access is easy when needed.

Intriguing my dear Watson! Do you have measurements for that area?

The sizes for a tank would be:
607mm long = 23.8976 inch
151mm wide = 5.94488 inch
193.5mm tall = 7.6181102 inch
http://www.viaircorp.com/Schematics/25gallon2_dd.pdf

More importantly, how does that impact the mounting surface for the aux. fuseboxes that the likes of antman and I have secured to the inner wall there? Have you had the passenger side open as well? would be shorter plumbing from the compressor.

Keep that thinking cap on MeBe4running!

you funny guy

I dont have measurements for that area yet. It was a quick sneak peak with the camera phone. Good point about you and Antman's chopping boards... I will have to take the front panel off for a thorough inspection.

Thanks for those measurements!

I haven't opened the drivers side as I envision that side for the internal plumbing for the snorkel :)

Lets keep this idea going....

Sorry for the brief response guys, responding from my iPad on vacation. Check post #48 on my build thread.

http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-g...-2011-trail-edition-beast-build-thread-4.html

Okki sent me a pm last week asking about this and I haven't had a second to respond since I got back from Death Valley. I can answer more questions about the install when I get back home on Tuesday.

Cheers!

I actually sent Okki some pictures of your setup. I think thats a great setup however for me I cant because of my ARB bumper. I can mount it in other locations within the ARB but not without making some crazy bracket for it.

Thanks for your input :)

Yeah I was going to copy socaltrail's setup but GrantK informed me that with the SW bumper with a winch that front bumper location is a no-go.

Snorkel is no problem just run it through the tank for that ram-air-forced-induction effect! Hahahaha Hahahaha :-)

I really like the idea and may borrow it some day!
But I would suggest bolting it to the inside fender on the engine side as I doubt the plastic inner fender liner would be strong enough for the rigors of offroading. Maybe bolt it to the wall and some foam underneath on the liner to help support it and relieve some of the stress to prevent possible future cracks in the sheet metal. The drivers side would hold a pretty big tank really and as you said the pass. side needs to be saved for the snorkel tube.

There's just enough room...

Well it fits!! Some custom work will be required though for a stock VIAIR 2.5 tank. I would also wrap the tank in some form of rubber to prevent contact with the front quarter panel. The best way to mount it going to be from the end(s) of the tank and not on the side. Then like harper7 said to mount it to the sheet metal on the engine bay's side. Otherwise I like the location enough to give it a go. I think it's a good use of space.

Here's some pics....

Very nice!
Good idea in wrapping it with rubber or foam rubber.
You took the fender inner liner off already! I know what a PIA that is ,as reaching the backside of those square holed plastic fasteners to release them sucks.I think I still have scars!

Thanks!

Yes, that inner fender line is not fun to remove. My tires have actually ripped half of those square fasters off, so I had a head start.

I'm thinking to use the same squares but place the liner in the middle between the sheet metal and the squares, then fasten by the same small black screws used to secure the top plastic molding trim. What do you think?
This way access will be ALOT easier than the OEM setup.

I will start some drawing's and contact a friend of mine who happens to a good welder. I will keep this thread posted.

Awesome spot for the tank!

I do remember that the tank does weigh a little bit, is there any solid real estate to bolt it up to other than the sheet metal in the inner fender? That metal it very thin up there. Love the idea, is the other fender well just as open? It would be awesome to have 5 gal of air!

Ha ha... with 5 gallons I could power all my air tools!

Your right the sheet metal is thin... I think I am going to make a bracket that would be on the interior side (engine bay) and have thread bolts going through connecting and fastening from inside of the engine bay. Its net weight is 14.5 pounds... so a strong bracket with plenty of support.

We will see....

Hi MeBe4runing, Couple observations:
1) In your test fit, you did not have any of the threaded holes on the tank pointed down; looks like there may not be enough room to fit a hose (or an elbow connector). Can you confirm that? you will want to have a downward connection to drain condensations from the tank.
2) Are there any brackets on the tank or did you already grind those off?
3) I noticed some holes near the firewall side of the fender opening. Could you weld some stock round-bar to the tank and use those holes as mounting points? maybe thread the round-bar and use nuts/washers on both sides?

Okki

I can confirm that there is PLENTY of room for a hose and a drain. Both sides.

The brackets are still on just facing upwards (another words the tank is just upside down)

Those holes are for the inner liner. They are also extremely frail, you could bend those holes with your finger. The best way to mount it is either going to be a "L" shaped bracket or a flush mount bracket straight from the tank to the engine bay wall. It would bolt right through into the engine bay where a few 2-3 inch thick, threaded plates would be. See attached image:

Here is a sneak peak of behind the passengers side wheel well...

There is the same amount of room as the driver's side though this piece from the intake is smack in the middle:
