Move Rear View Camera

I searched for an answer to this, didn't find it and maybe missed.

I need to move the Rear View Camera to the top of the rear lift door or just below the rear window to see a view. I have a Lift with an electric Scooter on the rear of the my vehicle and the camera sees only the far edges and just the lift and Scooter. Does anyone think it can be done or has it been done?

Have a 2010 Limited.

I can't do it for physical reasons but if I had the mod instructions I think could find a friend or two do it for me or take to a shop with the instructions.

I can peep through the cracks and see just a little. Sure would like to see the path behind me for safety reasons as well.

If your camera was factory installed, I am pretty sure you will not have enough slack in the cable from the factory to move the existing camera to where you want. I could be wrong. I am assuming since you have a limited you have a Nav system and the monitor is your nav screen. These cameras come as a kit and have different lengths of cable. Might be able to splice in some extra cable or get an extenstion for the input at the monitor's side.

Might want to talk to your stealer to see if they can order (or even need) a longer cable. Another suggestion is to get a wireless camera and another monitor. The second monitor can be placed in a multitude of different places in your vehicle, for example, attached to the sun visor and flipped up when not in use. You can then mount the second camera anywhere you want. Just a thought.

Check with aftermarket stereo places too. Then might be able to do a secondary install for the second angle as Jtraskell spoke of. If you are successful please post pics up.

All kidding aside, I second the idea of a supplemental backup camera. They are inexpensive (under $100.00 in some cases) and wireless if you choose. The monitor can be mounted anywhere and so can the camera. Install can be done in the driveway with very little disassembly in less than a few hours. Good luck!

I recently moved the camera on my 4th gen and assume they're very similar. Really the hardest part was building a new enclosure for it. This was necessary in my case because I added a bumper that held my spare, gas cans, etc that blocked the view. Secondary was extending the wires which was very basic, cut and splice in wire extensions. Care must be taken to route the wires inside the tailgate to avoid interfering with the rear window. If it would help I can provide some photos of the final result.

Extending the wires - why not just tap into the connector that's on the tailgate side of the harness? you don't have to worry about running wires around the motor housing/lock/etc. You also don't have to run as much wire.

I'm sure it would be easy to move the camera and extend the wires, but it's something you will just have to get in there and figure out to make it work.

Sounds like a fun project- want to drive to MD?

Like 1Engineer and Jtraskell stated- I think an aftermarket wireless kit may be the way to go. You can pick one up cheap, mount it anywhere quickly, and the factory camera remains intact for when you sell the truck. I installed one in my Titan and was happy with the results.

Extending the wires - why not just tap into the connector that's on the tailgate side of the harness? you don't have to worry about running wires around the motor housing/lock/etc. You also don't have to run as much wire.

That's what I did, the wires still have to be extended. The length depends on where you move it to, as I said mine's now on the bumper so the loom still has to go around everything inside the tailgate.

Am leaning toward a second camera as suggested. Like I mentioned any rewiring and such would have to be done by someone other than me. So that makes it seem to me to consider the add on camera. Still, I looking at all the posts.

I still have an Old Grouch living with me and she is very handy with things. Has to have been as my present condition is more than 30 years in duration. I may can look/see and guide her. I'm still appreciating all the responses.

Well Tex, if she is still there after 30 years, even in your "present condition" and still willing to be "guided" by you, I think a nomination to sainthood is in order! As to a second camera, Yea, may be your best bet. I would reaffirm getting a wireless in your case, much easier to install. Good luck bud. Be safe.
