Dear All,
Got a good job offer and will be moving to Connecticut (Hartford area). I was wondering if any of you have any recommendations in terms of
a) Good, family friendly areas to live (looking to rent a townhouse or a house for now)
b) Good, trustworthy mechanic shop for the T4R and my wife's Accord.
Please let me know.
Thanks

Lived in and around Danbury for many years so while I can't be specific in Hartford I've been there enough to say I would get something near / on the CT river. And get ready for high taxes and silly gun laws.

phillyd2 - Damn high taxes! I am open to surrounding areas like Glastonbury, Farmington, West Hartford, Tolland- are those good areas to live?

Been up to Farmington River and Duning (sp?) lake more than a few times and its nice. Sorry but not having lived there I can't say which area would be best. If it was me - and I've done it a few times - I would rent at a long term suite type place for 6 months or so while I got to know the area. I know its sort of a hassle but once you move into a Townhouse / House its a PIA to move again.

PA will be sorry to lose you.

The Mansions at Hockanum Crossing

Close to I84 and a short drive to Hartford. Pretty nice area and newly built I believe. Don't know much about the pricing but it's fairly quiet with lots of young families living there.

Lots of shops near there too (Buckland Hills, and a walk around outlet type as well)

Mason- Thanks a lot Mason- looks like a great property- will definitely check them out next weekend when I visit!

It's a really nice area! Cabelas is close to there as well if you are big into outdoors recreation. If you're a college sports fan you got UConn football at Rentschler Field (right next to Cabelas) as well as XL Center and Gampel for basketball.

I have family in Hartford and Norwich... they both use a little shop right off the highway by the McDonalds. Sorry forgot the name....MY advice..... the prices there are insane...just use the dealer..

I'm in Madison, CT which is on the LI sound smack dab in the middle of the state. I spend 95% on my time on the shoreline as I work and live here and really only pass through the Hartford area on the way to VT, NH and ME. The towns you mentioned are all great with West Hartford probably being my favorite. They have a great downtown area there. If you have any questions about CT , PM me and I'll give you my number and try and help any way I can. And don't listen to them, the gas is cheap, taxes are low and we have insurance rates that can't be beat.

I also recall spending a lot of money at a auto shop near hartford when I blew out an oil pan..... then was a bit of time back and I recall labor cost being about 80 bucks an hour...
good luck

I was born in Hartford and lived there for 27 years. Lived in Newington for 5 years and now have lived in Wethersfield (good school system) for the last 21 years. I have relatives who live in West Hartford, Avon,Glastonbury,Farmington, Rocky Hill, Windsor (no). Speaking of taxes, they are not bad in Farmington. You really have a lot of nice towns to choose from around the Hartford area.
Now as for a trustworthy mechanic, I have been going to the same shop for the last 20+ years. They are reasonable and honest and when need be they tell me to go to the dealer.
They are located right in Hartford and I can get there in 10 minutes which makes it convenient for me and my family. I bring ALL my cars & trucks there (see below).
