MPG's way up

Well, did a full tune up on my 99 T4R, 4x4, auto, 192K miles. Did the plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, O2 sensor, oil change and ISR mod. Had been averaging just over 14MPG with a 50/50 city/highway mix.
Drove to Pittsburgh this morning, got 18.89 MPG, holla! LOL

Is Pittsburgh 50/50 City/HIghway? I used to get about 14mpg 50/50 and about 18mpg straight highway.

Don't mean to rain on the parade, just curious.

Good job on the tune up though! Preventive maintenance is the best!

Yep! I strongly recommend plugs every year or about 15k miles, and the air filter every 10k miles. I know, the plugs look OK, and filter doesn't seem that dirty.. But, I spent a couple of years and some cash on profession oil analysis, and the oil really will tell the story! My 2001 has 158k on it, I consistently get 18.5 MPG, and it runs great. The other problem these have is that the air filter doesn't seal well in the box. I use cheap latex caulk around the filter rim, and slip it in the box. Takes up the gap,and is easy to remove for replacement. The oil tests were much cleaner after sealing the air filter in! This has a real effect on engine wear. YMMV.

Interesting post. 18.5 consistently (a lot of city?) is amazing. I get 17 mpg city, 20.5 highway fairly consistently, but I have to take care to achieve that, watch RPMs and jackrabbit starts and that sorta thing.

But my questions to you are:--- how often do you change the oil? is it synthetic oil or regular? what does that mean to get a professional oil analysis-- what does it measure, or whatever?

ISR Mod?

Intake Silencer Removal mod. You basically take all of those stupid little boxes out of the intake pipe and plug holes, I used PVC caps for mine. It doesn't look all that good but it worked.

Good to hear, Ive done all of the same maintance recently but the o2 sensor. Which one did you buy and how much ?

Pittsburgh was all highway but I had an all highway tank pre- tuneup that only yielded me just UNDER 15 mpg. The tune up made it like a new truck, ran well before but runs better now.

Now after four tanks of gas I'm averaging 18mpg, mostly stop-and-go city traffic with some interstate

Not anything to brag about, but at least it's an improvement!

Bought my Denso O2 sensor on Amazon. $63. Turns out, my truck has California emission. So, the O2 sensor for a CA truck was $104. I called Amazon, b*tched at them that their part finder said the other one was right but Denso said different (I yelled at them for my mistake really) and they gave me the correct one for $63.

Sounds like our had similar improvements. I drove back today with the AC on and had the cruise control set at a hair under 75, I made back withban average of 18.19 MPG's.

I didn't buy it for the gas mileage but I am very pleased with the improvement after the tune up.

Did you use NGK wires? If so, how much were they? It's one of the last routine things I need to do.

I did use NGK wires, they were about $36 on Amazon I think, might have been a little less. Free shipping too but I ordered them with other things to get the free shipping.

I have 97 4Runner with 199k. I am still able to get 18 MPG.
In the last year I have replaced:
* plugs
* wires
* air filter (cleaned my K&N)
* oil (obviously)
* fuel filter was changed 2 years ago

I still have the stock 02 sensor and can't see any reason to change it at the moment.

your o2 sensors should be replaced every 90-100k according to the dealer.
I have 212K and they weren't throwing codes but i went ahead and replaced them anyways. that with new plugs and a fuel filter, cleaned my K&N and now im at 17mpg(running 285 70 17 and i didnt do the recalculation for the different size) i cant wait to see what i get when i put the new wires on.

For me it is my driving cycle, you are correct, easy on the gas, and stay out of the ECT mode. Tires and pressure matter too. So does gas quality. It does run better on Premium, but who can afford it now? For oil analysis visit dyson ANALYSIS Terry is a great guy! I run Quaker State full synthetic with a Purolator yellow filter, change every 4-5k. The most important thing, I have found for economy is state of tune. The plugs, (NGK standard dual electrode only!), good plug wires, good O2 sensors, (replace both before 100k miles) Denso's are fine from SparkPlugs.com.. Keep the air filter clean and sealed in. That should do it. YMMV. You don't need any fancy parts. Good quality standard parts are fine.

Sort of kicking myself in the ass though, I also had a BMW 528iT. 5 speed, super clean, few little mods on it. I sold it a few months ago because I was never driving it. That car was fun to drive and great on gas, should've just kept it but oh well.
