Got my winch today and figured I can install it even though I have plans to powder coat my bumper in the near future.

Test fitting the winch and it fits like a glove! Well sort of... The hieght of the handle does not allow it to fully engage so I had to grind off some the handle. I used a dremel and a sanding wheel and it looks really good though!

Now we are tired so this is were we stopped the cables need to be extended unfortunately.... a job for tomorrow...

I just got off the phone and they are mailing me a new clutch lever and endcap to swap in. I must say even though i was grumpy i was very pleased with their customer support. Plus found out there is a lifetime warranty on all mechanical components

My issue is I can't disengage my clutch most of the time. Course the winch is like 10 years old...

Going to have to have Ryan set me up with the full skids sometime in the near future and hopefully test them out in the near future. You need to reply to my PM about the South Dakota trip.

Don't get the 8k smitty bilt for your 4x bumper it doesn't fit because of the handle... You need to grind off about half of it to get it to go. It is because it has the handle on the side sticking straight up.. If it is on the top it fits fine i hear.

Ryan's skid plates on the other hand fit like a glove. I didn't see your pm about the dakotas trip I don't think but Ryan and I have been talking about it. I just need to see where I am at money wise lol. Im gonna be going to some more local events and many other misc camping trips. I would like to get out there though and have a real reason to use my RTT. It should be here next week sometime.

Just looked at it and the handle sticks up too. I have also looked at the Trail Gear winch that is supposed highly rated.

Did you just modify the handle on your Smittybilt to work?

I havn't heard of Trail Gear, but to get the Smittybilt to work I just used a sanding wheel on a dremel and took off about a 1/4 in of material, it was not terrible, i will take pics when I replace the clutch.

The handle being on the top like the tiger shark will work I am told. The smittybilt handle has it on the side which you would think have more clearance, but I guess not.

Well had to use the winch for real this weekend. I was bored at my parents house and figured I could take a drive out in the back 40 to see how much snow was left. It was not bad at all so I pulled up on mound to take some poser shots.




Now here is where the stuff hit the fan lol. I went pull down the back side of the burm and it looked like nothing, but being the west side more snow accumulates there. As I got to the bottom I had a bad feeling and a as soon as the rear wheels came off the hill, bam. It was like hitting a wall. The snow was about 2-3 feet deep and had water flowing under it. Luckily my skids went into sled mode and I didn't sink down to the slushy junk. Only problem is now the front is at full droop and the rear axel is stuck in the snow and the rear bumper was dragging....



Eventually after fighting my winch's bad clutch I made it to here and was almost out. The passenger side is still sunk other wise I would have just driven out. The smittybilt had plenty of pulling power now if I just get the clutch fixed it will be perfect.



It eventually came free and I was able to make it to high ground again.

Then today I buried It again on a turn row. This time it was no where near as bad though and didnt need the winch just a little digging, 4lo, and locked and she walked right out.

Roof top tent will be here tomorrow so i know what I will have to do this weekend I also picked up one of these recovery kits from eBay we will see what kind of quality it is but it looks legit.. Its not arb, but it should do.
