Muffler rattle

Happy New Year, everyone

My muffler has been making a rattle, and this morning after letting the auto start warm the car up, there was a drip-trail of water at both the end of the tailpipe (as usual) and another from back in the muffler area.

Questions i have:

1) can i buy an aftermarket muffler or is the 4runner a "oem cat + muffler $$$"? Or can it just be the muffler thats replaced?

2) would an aftermarket muffler (Borla, flowmaster, etc) mess with my emissions inspection?

Thanks

You can get an aftermarket muffler on its own and just weld it in - any exhaust shop can do it quick and easy.

A muffler has nothing to do with emissions, only sound.

Probably going to go with a Gibson. I just bought a 3-decker in the city, not a lot of spare $ to throw around.

Are you sure it's the muffler? My 4Runner made a rattling sound underneath basically all the time at idle and slow acceleration from a stop. Found out my issue was the dust shield on the cat. I clamped the two halves together using a hose clamp and no more rattling :)

On another note, I have the Magnaflow cat-back exhaust and I love it. A little drone at some speeds but I got used to it. I have the 4.0L though. Ebay usually has them for pretty cheap if you're on a budget. I got mine brand new for a couple hundred under retail.

Im not sure, but ive narrowed the rattle to the muffler-area, and there are 2 water drips instead of just the one at the end of the tailpipe, leading me to believe there's a hole somewhere.

So damn weird....

This morning, while driving to work....not one rattle...not one noise...as if nothing happened! I haven't had anything done yet! What the hell???
