MxwlT4R99's Build Thread

Finally! A few weeks ago, I obtained a new-to-me '99 4runner, SR5 4x4 with an auto transmission. I had been looking for a rig to simply get around town and for transport to and from ski resorts in the winter here in Missoula (attending the University of Montana).

Test driving it, the brake pedal was soft and the steering was a bit...off. I didn't really realize the extent of it until $4k later after the purchase and I took it onto the highway...the steering wheel acted like a drunken madman and couldn't be controlled in any way above 60 mph.

Upon learning of this problem, I took it to midas (the closest car-repair place to campus) and had them go through the front end. Turned out that nothing was wrong with the front suspension (on the bright side), but it was instead the driveshafts (BOTH of them) were greatly out of balance and one of them was even tweaked to the point that it had to be straightened. The master cylinder was put on as well @ this time.

It handles much better now. Finally driveable at high speeds but a bit of the wobble is still there. Other mods so far include a Kenwood head unit, deep cleaning the interior (it was coated a billion times over with dog hair), Bugflector, window rain deflectors, a sunroof deflector, Ultragauge, ISR mod, and new plugs/wires (have yet to be put in).

An OME rear 890 coil lift with 5100's is in the mail as well, in addition to front tundra billies that will be used with the stock coils. Steering rack and front/rear sway bar bushing kits were also purchased; a total of about $550 from wheelers.

I've been a long-time lurker, and this is my first 4runner...I feel almost ahead of the game knowing about LBJ issues and the 'pink milkshake' right off the bat. A tranny cooler is definitely on the list of mods in the near future, right after a set of 265/75r16 Duratracs...

The rig in question, before any mods were done to it. It has a rebuilt title (carfax showed 2 different wrecks, a minor front end bender and a sideswipe, both with no resulting frame damage) and has about 250k miles...Still runs like a champ

Nice! You're absolutely right on being ahead of the game from reading here. I either get inspired to spend money, or scared in to spending money - either way she just keeps getting better so it's all good. Be sure to post pics with suspension done, and if you're DIYing it I must suggest you investigate the spring-compressorless front suspension trick. Very quick job that way.

Okay, thanks for the tip. I'll have to look into that.
I also need to get a pair of flairs for the front to match the rears...I think they're the same ones as in your sig, hour. When the front was repainted to match after body repairs they must've been forgotten about or damaged in the wreck.

I forgot I also did the LED map and dome light conversion, and have all the led's necessary to get the dash converted but haven't gotten around to it yet. Will hopefully get some more pics up tomorrow

Philips CrystalVision Ultra headlight bulbs from amazon, about 20 bucks... definite improvement over stock headlights. Beam is brighter, a bit more pure of a white and less scattered imo. The pictures don't represent the color difference as accurately as I would like, but you get the idea...stock on the drivers side and Philips on the passenger's

Low beam, color difference a bit more noticeable

High beam, Philips (passenger side) is waaaay brighter here but doesn't show up well in the pic

I pretty much put these in to use until they burn out. No complaints so far but have only had them in for about a well. I have 0 intention of doing a HID conversion but possibly will be doing a projector retrofit in the not-so-near future...

But for now, headlights are finished :bravo: for $20 you really can't go wrong if you don't want to drop a ton of money on headlights!

Progress for today...swapped out spark plugs, wires and plug boots. Old wires were pretty much gone and the boots looked like they had been left in a toaster for 20 years...they were a light brown color and were worn through in places. The plugs had to go because they were clearly old and only had one 'prong' as opposed to the recommended double-prong plug.

New vs old spark plugs, brown on the new plugs is anti-seize

A pic of the engine compartment after the mid-swap. Wanted the blue NGK wires but O'Reilly didn't have any in stock... Import direct was cheaper anyway and included the plug boots.

There is quite a bit of sh*t needed to get the engine bay in order...the lower bolt mount for the air box in broken off and the plastic fuse box is cracked really badly, to the point that the cover won't fit on anymore; the windshield fluid reservoir doesn't hold any fluid at all due to a hold/crack yet to be found. I've been keeping my eye out for a junkyard truck for these reasons...

The plugs didn't really add any noticeable performance or acceleration gain, but the engine does sound 'happier' and more on point than before (not as much clatter). It was worth the cost (about $100 for boots, wires and plugs; a 10mm socket lost deep inside the engine bay :mad2:).

In the pic, you can also see the ISR (Intake Silencer Removal) mod. As far as performance gains, it definitely is more responsive to throttle movement in the low-mid range. The loud intake throttle sound others experienced was not apparent to me, but I did notice that my muffler obtained a much throatier note @ idle. It was worth the $10 I spent on the pipe and the troubleshooting I did after the mod (the code P0171 popped up) but after 4 hose clamps and clearing the code it has yet to reappear.

I was wondering, does anyone else have the Ultragauge? How accurate are these things? Mine shows me getting about 12 mpg around town and about 18-22 highway depending on the speed...12mpg town seems a bit low but the highway numbers were almost better than I expected. What are you guys getting?

Alright, it's been awhile, I was home for winter break and my truck got left here in Missoula. Right now, it's just been daily driven, so excuse the poser pics. Since I last posted, I put on 265/75r16 Duratracs, put on a new fuel filter (biggest PITA ever-nut was seized so had to replace entire from the engine to the filter) and done the deckplate mod. Here's the most recent picture I have:

Nice progress!

Did you get the Tundra 5100's or the 4runner/Taco 5100's? A lot of people make the mistake of getting them 4/T 5100's.

Can't stress enough to replace Lower ball joints with OEM's before you lift her.

I just purchased an 01 with 246k and that was the first thing I did before lifting. Unfortunately the uppers needed replacement as well.

Good stuff btw

I got the Tundra's for sure. Heard 'mushy' things about the Taco shocks. However, I don't have Tundra TRD coils yet, so I may just lift her with the stock '99 springs...time will tell I guess. Just don't want to shell out ~$200 for them off of wheelers.
As for the ball joints, I am definitely replacing the lowers, but not to sure about the uppers. When I got my driveline balanced they checked my front suspension and said that the lowers should be replaced within the next couple years, but didn't mention the upper bjs. I may just replace them when I have everything ripped apart.

It's easier to replace them with everything ripped apart. The only reason I replaced the uppers were because the boots were ripped and apparently have been for sometime. (similar mileage as yours)

You can also try the Toytec 620's for 169.99. Keep your 5100's on the 1st perch and still get 3" lift.
