My 89 rebuild/restore

So I've got all my engine bits together. Going to try my FIRST engine rebuild, as well as a tranmission swap to a 5spd, possibly a cluster gague swap too, if it will fit. Seats, rear window regulator, (thinking about power driver and passenger windows if I can make it work, electric bit's ,yikes) radio. Sun roof if I can swing it with my newb fabricating skills, (how hard can it be? Cut a hole and apply lots of silicone right? LOL!) Fixing the freaking RUST HOLE in the cargo bay literally RIGHT behind where the driver side leaf mounts, again yikes. Lucky I know ,Kind of, how to weld.
-gasket kit
-timing belt kit
-oil & water pumps
-piston rings
Waiting to see about the condition of the pistons & valve's. To determine if I need to replace them.
Going to pull up my 91 4donor next to it. As the motor & tranny in it are solid, at only 120k miles. So if anything goes terrible I've got a back up engine, xD.

Will be posting pics starting tomorrow. If anyone has any advice, like things they wish they would have done while they had the motor out, or tranny, or whatever. Please share. I want to do this right the first time with minimal headaches.
Or maybe a tool you wish you would have had, but didn't on your rebuild.

So I took the intake off, to find it was full of oil. Got the radiator out. Now working on getting all the vaccine hoses, and eletctric all cords disconnected.

I had wondered why it spat so much white smoke LOL

I like these generations (I've had three). The biggest challenge is always their engines. Luckily my latest one had the engine rebuilt already for me. Was considering doing all this when my 93' V6 blew a head gasket. I went with a better truck. The 93' was rusty so I got this one:

Thanks Vokeys(that's s clean 4runner btw!!), it will be a slow process, but I'm going to try to do it step by step, and pictures EVERYTHING!!

As for progress today, I'm taking my wife and kids to ohio today, won't be back until wednesday/thursday. But in the mean time. Here's a picture of "ye olde rusty hole" in the cargo bay. Seeing as how it's so close to where the leafs mount. Anyone have any ideas on the best way to chop it up and put a new price of metal in there?
I honestly want to cut the entire bed out and replace it with a sheet of stainless.

I don't have any pics of mine, but that's a tough spot. If you plan on keeping this for a long time, I adopt the attitude of "doing it right the first time". A sheet of stainless would not only be sweet, but you'd avoid that issues again. It would be a pretty huge project to do with the experience I do have. I always check the body mounts and what they're connected to to gauge how big a rust issue actually is. Cosmetic is normally just cut out and weld back in. But I'd caution that because the gas tank is so close. Unless removed I never feel comfy doing that. But ultimately, if it rusted there once, It has the potential to again.

Edit* the gas tank is close ish, not super close obviously. Just something to think about.

Yeah I definitely want to do it right the first time:dancin:. And the deeper I dive. I'm starting to realize it may take me until next summER to have it actually drivable ke the way I want it:faint:. Which SUCKS! But I want everything to be as good as it can be.

Those folks over there are super cool. Instead of paying the $30 for shipping I was going to be in there area, right on the Ohio River between Kentucky, and indiana. They said I could come pick it up in person. Maybe I can get a "behind the scenes" look at how they make these such "killer" soft tops LOLarty:. Needless to say I'm very excited about the soft top. :guitar2:

I'm kind of wanting to install a second gas tank too. As I want to use this 4runner for camping, road trips, mild off roading. And with the top that comes off I know the kids should love it. . Hoping to get this thing so good, they have great memories with it for lifetime.

Enough of this morning rant, lol. Here's my tacoma since I'm not at home right now.

Hey scott, you may be better off picking a console from a yoda pickup and then gettin yourself some red fabric (if you can get the shade right, or as close as possible) and do it yourself.
Shift boot, I'd hit goodwill look for one of those red pleather jackets that are almost ALWAYS at the goodwills where I live in nashville TN. Cut that suckered up, and re stich.

With our trucks, they are only going to be as nice as the time and effort that we put in to them. I have HUGE plans for mine. But it's a very slow process. I've been busy with work so haven't had a chance to get out there and wrench on it more. I have gotten qutoes for my stainless steel panels im goING to put in. But that's about it /:
Hopfully going to get back at it this week.

I believe the term"Yoda" is referring to a donor Toyota vehicle. Getting a donor console lid, and removing the vinyl and replacing with red fabric: maybe with the leftover material from the donor "jacket" at the thrift store (this was a great suggestion).

I'm back.

Work has been well. . . . F*u*Ed up for the entire summer.
But I'm finally able to hook it up on my 4runner. Going to finish the engine pull, and start pulling the donor engine.
And soon I should have a working 5spd 89 convertable.

Update

So I've got the exhaust off, and the rest of the intake.
About to remove the wire harness from the engine.here are a few pictures,
About the exhaust, the pictures shown are of the crossover pipe, these aren't actually what is supposed to be removed for an easy engine pull.
Just a bit further down the pipe, take the flange apart from the exhaust pipe after the merge.
You'll need a 2ft extension, universal socket, and a lot of penetrating oil.

I guess after the whole site hack thing yesterday some stuff got lost in the fix.
So, basically I had spent like 45mintues posting the other day.. so, I'm just going to post the pictures, if any questions I will be more than happy to answer.





Uhm, nevermind? Everytime I try to upload a picture it just says upload eerror. Soooooooooo. That's a bummer.
But I got the engine out, now it's time to either
A- go over the motor that was in it, and rebuild it
Or
B- pull motor+trans from my 91 give it a quick refresh while it's out of the car then drop it into the 89.

I do have a full rebuild kit for a 3vze. I just don't want to really do that. Mainly because I don't have a lot of the special tools I need. Don't want to wait to long to get to driving it either.

Update

Still can't post the pix.

Looking for a solid IFS lift & spacing
Thinking 4 to 6 inches lift, and 2inches space
Wanting to run 35x12.5R15's
Going to spring UNDER in the rear, with a 6 inch lift.

Due to the fact the site won't let me post my pictures. And Everytime I try to reply I have to log in to be able to get to the screen to type, then it forces me to log in again once I hit post. I even tried to start a new thread.

Normaly you can just use the 'insert image' icon and paste your img http.... link and your done.

Ido too. Because I'm not doing anything different than before lol.
I still haven't tried to upload them on my actual PC, and maybe that's the problem. Not sure. But I'm still taking a bunch of pics and will hopefully be able to post them eventually.

Got my rear disc conversion, and FJ80 Master cylinder, AND 6in rear lift kit in the mail this past week. Going spring under, and I talked with trail gear on the phone, they said they would send me 10in shocks instead of the 12in that come with the 6in kit. They still sent me 12in. Even though it's 100% their fault, I'll still have to foot the return shipping bill. So I'm just going to make it work. Maybe do a little angular shock mounting, idk. Need to do more research before I start getting into that.
I want it to be safe LOL!
