My dealer told me it isn't possble to reprogram keyless entry.

My dealer told me the keyless entry cannot be changed to unlock all doors with a single press. He says he checked with his tech guys, the service manager, and the regional tech support crew, and they all said the same thing - not possible. Has anyone with a 2004 4Runner had any luck in getting this done?

I don't see this as a problem—why do you want to unlock all the doors at once? Is pressing the button twice really that much of a chore?

My '96 4Runner opened all the doors with the remote—and I hated it.

If some thief, bum, or gangbanger is after you, why would you want to give him entry access to your car? If you're in a not-too-safe part of town, better to only unlock your door...

That said, have you checked into the Toyota alarm systems (what are they up to, RS3200?), they may provide some options that aren't available with the stock keyless entry system. Of course, the alarm system costs $$$...

I thought I remember reading in the manual (might have been elsewhere) about being able to do this. But I don't remember if it said to check with a dealer about doing it..

But I agree, I like having the two press option. All doors don't always need to be opened when entering the car. But if you want it that way, I think it can be changed.. Not sure though..

On page 20 of the Owner's Manual, it says, "This double switch operation to unlock all the side doors and back door can be changed to a single switch operation. For details, contact your Toyota dealer."

So, Iowa4Runner, it looks like your dealer is full of sh#t...

I'd press him again, and if he won't do it, find another dealer who will.

Yes, it is. I had that changed the 2nd day I had the truck. Pressing the button 2 times instead of 1 is twice as much work than just pushing it once. All they had to do was plug into the OBD port with their scan tool and switch the option. Didn't cost a dime.

So does that change when you use the key, if you for some reason use the key to enter. It's set to unlock the driver door when turned once, and unlock all when turned twice (or held in place, don't remember which since i don't use the key). I'm just curious if that is changed as well, mostly because I wonder if the two systems are connected somehow.

After a quick trip to the garage, it seems the remote locks and unlocks all doors with just one push as stated before, and the key works as it did before the reprogramming. Turn the key once to lock all doors, once the other way to unlock the driver's door and twice to unlock all doors. Obviously the beep that normally accompanies the button-press isn't there either, but the alarm is turned on and off with the key and not just the button which isn't usually how cars are. Unlock it with the key and the alarm goes off, always pretty annoying if you ask me.

Ahh, ok, cool.. hmm.. but i think i'll keep it the way it is. i've never been bothered by it, and i like the security of just being able to unlock the drivers door.

and, i've never tested it, but i remember the sales guy at the dealership saying that you need to unlock with the remote/key combo for it not to alarm..

Beats me, I locked it with the remote and unlocked it with the key and opened the door, no alarm...

Thanks for the info guys. I'll direct my dealer to page 20 of the owners manual. If he still balks I'll just go swipe an OBD scan tool from the service dept.
