My Engine Swap in progress!

When you say the main pulley which are you referring to? The one on the crank, or the one that is bilted on with the fan?

And also, do you have part numbers for the oil pump stuff?

I checked last night and both pulleys have to be swapped. Actually, the fan pulley is 2 pieces--- only the rear one needs to be swapped.

oil cooler o ring 9030167004

oil strainer gasket 1514762020

I got my part numbers from: Toyota Parts Direct - Your Canadian Source For OEM Toyota Parts Online | Toyota Parts Direct

Also, exhaust manifolds have to be swapped and oils strainer, as the pan sumps are totally different, and motor mounts...

no wonder it was making such a racket!!

I pulled the pan on my old engine last night and found this in the bottom:

The roundish piece is a bolt head from a con-rod bearing cap bolt.... and various 3"-4"pieces of metal and aluminum shavings.... it was worse than I thought!

Awesome thanks for the help man.

something extra

Awesome thanks for the help man.

One last thing, to get the block plug out of the block for the oil cooler union, you will need a 8mm male hex driver and to remove the threaded pipe shaft from the oil cooler location (and thread it into the oil filter location, you'll need a 12mm male hex driver.

And that is a huge help. Because I dont have any of those on hand. Thank you fortheheads up. Ill habe to grab some.

Hey Poleclimber,

Glad to see you making progress on the swap!! It looks like you're moving right along, and it's good to see that all the small obstacles you've faced have yet to stump you / slow you down! I'm sure your 4Runner will be up and running better than ever very soon.

Moving along...

I moved the unions around, got the oil strainer and pan placed also helped the young one with homework!! Looks like I'll have to deal with the starter before I get the engine replaced... Tomorrow, oil cooler, mounts, ac bracket...

Getting there! I'm being cautious with this, as I have $$$ invested! I try to get a hour done every evening. I was hoping to get the engine ready this weekend, but I need to order a starter kit and a pre-formed hose to throttle body. Boating season is getting close!!! I can feel the end of this project!

ready to go

Darn it! I'm ready to drop my replacement engine back in the truck but the sky opened up and the rain fell!! Hopefully, I'll get the time to do it tomorrow... Once I get the engine in, my next decision will be which throttle body to use. Some reseacrh will be required.

If anyone has done a JDM swap, I would be interested in the experiences as to whether anyone attempted to use the JDM equipment!

I checked the part numbers on the iac, because I wanted to use the jdm one since it looked brand new...checked out and I plan on putting it on my current throttle body. The one that came with my motor is wayyyyy different. And doesn't have cruise control.

What vehicle was your JDM engine out of? My JDM engine is out of a Hiace van (I discovered this by cross-referencing some part numbers) and I won't be suprised if everything is different.... I still have some searching to do...

I discovered, this evening, I made an over-sight.... I was considering using the ALT that came with the JDM (its a higher amp unit and would require a pulley swap) and after gazing at the engine for a few minutes, it suddenly hit me, I used the JDM fan bracket!! Duh!! Due to the extra width on the pulley, the fan bracket, AC bracket and PS bracket are all about 3/8" longer! I thought about using all JDM pulleys and brackets (ALT/higher rating= wider pulley/increased load) but I measured the increased length and this would bring the fan closer to the rad..... so I measured the fan mount/clutch assy. and found it was also 1/4" LONGER! The only way to know if any of this will fit behind the rad is to try it.... not sure if I have the patience... tomorrow I'll pull the fan bracket off my old engine and swap it. This is probably for the best, as I discovered a small crack in the plastic TB cover, which I will swap, as well. I'm glad I noticed this before I dropped the engine in the truck! Live and learn!

Question:

Fellow members, with the previous post in mind, can anyone with a stock 4Runner measure the clearance between the front edge of the fan and the rad? If I have clearance, I just may try using the longer brackets... If anyone can take a sec to measure this for me, I'd appreciate it!!!

Thanks ahead of time!

I'm pretty sure mine is from a van too. And good catch on the fan bracket. I would have ended up in the same boat.

Man I'm gad your doing all this stuff like a week before me. Takes a lot of the headaches out on my end. So I appreciate it.

I spent time considering options... I dry fit atl, fan bracket etc. and measured... it would have been a PITA if I'd discovered this, with the engine in the truck!!
Last week, I used 2 bottles of engine cleaner to clean the engine compartment as well as painting all the spot rust (luckily the spot rust was only on the battery shelf)!
Tonight, I swapped the fan bracket, installed all covers and aux brackets, and bolted the chains to the engine. Tomorrow, if I can get home a little early, I'm going to install the engine! I'll let you know how it goes!

Awesome news. I hope it goes in well for you. I'm waiting for a few things still.

Need my hex sockets to get in to switch the oil cooler and filter around. Also waiting on the hoses for that. Mt clutch kit should get here tomorrow. So far tonight I've gotten the mounts, oil pan switched over. Headed to the fan bracket, and manifolds next. If all goes well I'll be able to drop it in Sunday but who knows.

Great! Glad to hear it! I switched the PS bracket (as it was totally different and longer to match the fan bracket and crank pulley) and ac bracket in addition to the fan bracket. I decided to use my old ALT and put a set of new brushes it it. I'll save the one from my JDM as a replacement, if I ever need it. As I mentioned before, I replaced the contacts in the starter as well.

Here is the engine back in, as of this evening:

back in!

The replacement went smoothly. My son helped by pushing, dropping, raising as requested. Once I got the bell housing bolts close, I threaded them in and pulled engine/bell housing together. I had to pull the wiring harness down and wrestle the cables and speedo cable roughly back to there original position. Over the next couple of days I will systematically re-connect everything. The one hiccup tonight was, when I placed the starter on the frame before I dropped the engine, the plastic tab on the starter connector broke off! I'll have to think about how to ensure the connector locks.... I hope to start it up this weekend!
