I was too cheap and impatient to pay $80 and wait weeks for mounts, so I set off to make my own:
First hardware was two 8" mending bars, cut in half to make 4 channel inserts. 1/4 inch bolts also go inside the channel, threads sticking out. Total 8 bolts and matching nuts.
The bolts are a really tight and won't slide inside the channel stock, so I simply hot the tops of the heads on the bench grinder to take a few thousands off - problem solved:
Then, I picked up 4 Simpson A24 ties.
I test the strength of one tie by standing on the apex, trying to get it to bend flat. I am 250 pounds. The tie didn't move an inch:
Trimmed the ties with a sawz-all, drilled appropriate holes for mounting to the channel bolts and U-bolts, and painted:
Final reassembly tomorrow, once RTV and silicone is dry on the rack. I have no doubt that the rood rack channels would fail before any of this hardware would.
