My homemade Stealthbox

$599 for a JL Audio Stealthbox??? I decided that I loved the look and space saving idea but I couldn't justify that much $ for a box. So I figured why not build one. Total cost $120! 1/2 " sheet of MDF $40, Alpine 1043 10" sub $65, speaker terminal $5, and $10 in glue, screws, and polyfil. I was fortunate to have my amp already which puts 150 watts out and it sounds AWESOME. The airspace required for a sealed box with this sub is .75 cu/ft - 1.5 cu/ft. Mine clocks in at .79 cu/ft. Drilled a hole through the box and wheel well for a 6" nut/bolt/lock washer setup so its nice and secure. Thinking about tan carpet but haven't decided yet because its covered by the cargo cover anyway. Ok maybe its not as "pretty" as the stealthbox, but for a $480 savings I think I can live with that... HA. Hope you guys dig it!

Great work, If you made that 1-2"s lower then the cargo cover looks like it would fit over it and make it more stealthy :biggrin2:
 
looks good I wanna eventually do something like this in mine. Now, it looks like you dont need that cargo cover....I can take it off your hands for ya :)
 
Actually, the cover is level with the top of the box. Pulls right over it. Kind of deceptive looking at that angle but I made sure it pulled out a couple times before the final assembly.

do you have a picture showing how you fastened it to the base?
 
looks great! i did something similar but with a 6in sub, .25^3ft box and 150w amp. works great and its perfect for my taste. i think i was in for <$180 including amp and speaker :D

Jungos, I added pics of the process. Basically I drilled a 3/8" hole through the diagonal lower box transition all the way through the wheel well. Pushed a 5" bolt through the box then put a flat washer, lock washer and nut on the back to lock it in place on the box. Then put the whole thing through the wheel well with another flat washer, lock washer, then nut. Extra wing nut just in case. A light spray w black paint on the end in the wheel well above the tire just to hide it a bit.

I've seen this on Cardomain before....I think it was slightly different though...but if I ever rocked a sub...I'd try an install like this! Virtually no cargo space lost....and looks almost factory!
 
I think the one in the cargo compartment would look 100x better if it were wrapped in vinyl. The texture of the carpet doesn't look right on a plastic interior panel.

The Stealthbox is nice, but not $600 nice lol. That's highway robbery.

I never thought that the Stealhbox was horribly out of line...

Since I build stuff all the time, many don't realize what goes into something like that... and im talking one offs here, not high volume like the box, but here it goes... just so you all understand it!

1/2 Sheet of MDF - $20
Box Of Screws - $5
3 small tubes of liquid nails - $15
Gallon of Resin and extra hardener - $50
Gallon of Dura Glass - $50
Gallon of Bondo - $25
Terminal Cups - $5
Hardware for mounting subwoofer - $5
1 yard of stretch fleece - $10
1 yard of color matched carpet or vinyl - $25
Subwoofer - $200

Thats $410 to make that enclosure and put a sub in it.... Now mind you, if I upped my MDF material I could probably make 2-3 of the enclosures with this material, but if you wanted to make one, this is about what you would run into. So don't get too bent out of shape with the JL box prices.
 
I'd always wanted to try and make one of those stealth boxes.

Another cheap option that is out of the way is this Pioneer enclosed set up...

TS-SWX251 - you can find one for about 100-130 online, they take 200w rms and up to 800w peak.

10" down firing sub that packs a nice punch, is low profile and you don't have to worry about throwing all your crap in the back and damaging it or also very easy to remove.

Fiberglass is the way to go, but for someone that doesn't have experience with it or doesn't want to try it, MDF is a great alternative. As far as Stealthboxes being highway robbery, everything JL is grossly overpriced. Don't get wrong, they are good, but you can get equal quality at a fraction of the cost from internet based brands such as Ascendant, Fi, Sundown, Stereo Integrity, among many others.
