How do you open map lights for bulb exchange? I tried to pull it, but it doesn't really work. I didn't want to force it, because it looks like I was going to break some clips.

BTW. Could you also tell how to open door and running boards lights?

OK, I'm going off memory on the map lights but you need to take a really small screwdriver, and actually pry out where you normally push to turn them on.

The doors are also just held in with a clip if I remember right, just use that same really small screwdriver to pull it out.

The running boards are easy, just look under the running boards. You'll see the connector, just twist it and it should just pop right out.

Ok, I made a deal with them and ordered few LED. I just receive e-mail that my order will be shipped on Monday. So next weekend I'll also do my LED project. I hope I'll have them by the end of next week. I can't wait to receive and install them. I want to try to do some mods with my DRL. If everything will go fine I
 
This afternoon finally I received the package. It took them 10 days to get it here. Looks like everything is fine. Tomorrow or Thursday will try do change some bulbs. I'll post some pictures while doing this upgrade.
 
Ok. I tried to use 194 type LED for running boards -> no way, those LEDs are worth then stock bulbs.
cdoyle where did you get your LED for running boards?
I've also done map lights and doors one. Those look nice. I'll post some images later...

I made mine own, using some 80ma 5mm LEDs. I tilted each led so it would help spread out the light some, since those LEDs had such a narrow beam pattern. They look pretty good.
 
well. i wrote an email to autolumination cause i was interested in cdoyel's mod. and this is what they said:

reply: Hi-
The 3157 led will not emit enough?light to be a headlight.
The current limiting resistors are built in, so it will light if connected
directly to a 12 volt power source.
The leds cannot be mounted next to a heat source, like a headlight bulb.?The heat from the headlight bulbs will destroy the leds.

i really want to do this mod. but i dont want the leds to die out. i dont think the heat would get to the led's especially if its in its own housing. what you guys think?

I've done this mod. The result wasn't so good. First LED is not brighter then standard bulb. Second, I wasn't satisfied with a look of it, so I removed them. Now I
 
I think your best best for hte parking light is to build your own, using larger LED's like I did. Mine turned out pretty good, I've had them in for about a year and haven't had any problems.

As for the brake lights, I think I have a plan on what I want to do.

Over at a LED forum I visit, alot of people take those LED truck modules, (the ones you see on dump trucks etc)and retro them into their housings.

Well looking at our 4Runner's tail light, it looks like once we open it up, and get that red cover off where the brake light is. It would hold a 4 or maybe 6 inch truck module just about right. Just would have to mount it in there, and then put the red cover and housing all back together.

When done with the lights off, you wouldn't even see it, and with the lights on you would have that nice LED matrix look.

I'm also think about building my own LED matrix to work down in the rear bumper lights.

There is a seperate thread on making the lower reflectors functional lights. The once like me that have tried it are not able to make all three functions work on the 1157 LED lights (parking/brake/turn signal). Maybe with your knowledge on LED's you can help solve the feedback of the turnsignal problem likely due to low resistance. I have tried adding resistors to make it electrical like a regular 1157 light but I lost the parking light fuction when doing that. Any thoughts?

Its just a thread on how to putting the red bumper lenses to use that turned into a LED discussion.
 
i installed the leds and it turned out great. the only thing i didn't like was i put one in the parking lights and it was really dim, but oh well. thanks for the mod. late.
