That's true...and since it is CVT, the response is pretty good when you "downshift" manually with the paddles. A nice touch by Subaru.

For whatever reason, the Outback sunroof is small...even the Forester sunroof is huge!
It is a good thing that I don't use it much.

After one week of travel, my mileage is 30 mpg. I maintain a cruise at around 68 mph. Mostly highway. Not bad...i like it. (My wife in the Prius is now consistently getting 51-52 mpg with mix driving.) My wife was getting 26-27 mpg in her Acura TSX before we traded in for the Subaru.

How do you like the CVT's? I have only ever driven one, and compared to a proper 4 speed auto, I'm not likely the way it drives, maybes it is because i almost exclusively drive stick, but the gearbox never seems to give me the right amount of power and its mind is always seeming to change.

It's ok. I am used to it because my Prius has it also. I still prefer a clutch less auto manual such as DSG or SMG if I want performance. However, CVT is very efficient which is what I am after rather than crisp shifts or pure speed. So, for you, I think that you will find it boring.

I've really grown to love the CVT. The shifting is seamless. No it does not give you much power, but if you are feeling a bit hairy you can really push the car using the paddle shifters. I've only really gone into maniac mode once, and it was only for about 3-5 minutes on some old twisty back roads. I waited until we had around 6000k miles in her broken in before I did that. The Outback did not disappoint.

Hopefully that CVT holds up better than Ford, VW and Audi CVT. those generally puke the bed at 50,000 miles. The cvt was the only reason I chose an Audi over the Subaru when I was in the market for an AWD car. Still love the styling of the new outback, if they weren't so pricey I would definitely have a 3.6R outback in my stable. Awesome car

Yeah, it is a different experience for me. Im glad the Jeep's CVT has the same characteristics as the rest of them, means its not broken!

It's nice but it has it's share of weird sounds (slow speeds in the parking lots) and emits an occasional weird smell (hot smells) maybe due to being new (got it with just under 4000 miles) but it is one high tech car for under $40k.
I do love having another AWD perfromance car. The only other bad is Subi Imprezas are everywhere and even the STi isn't uncommon and they ask gold for these cars in this state.

Went into the local Subie dealer, Shortline, last week, had some time to look at their vehicles. I asked the salesman which model of Outback is the most popular here in Colorado and he said the 2.5 CVT.
I'll share this with the forum... I truly enjoy my 4Runner and it's given me no problems at all.
However, with the rising fuel prices that appear to be for good... getting 14-15 MPG around town and 18-20MPG on the highway just does not cut it for me anymore!
Yes, I enjoy what I can do with the 4Runner, especially up high in the mountains. But the fuel cost is a concern.
My 4Runner is immaculate with very low miles and I know I can get a gret price for it selling it to a private party or on a trade-in. Honestly, I am VERY hesitant to sell it!
Don't know if I could go from the power and smoothness of the V8 to a 4 cylinder.
I would prefer the manual tranny... but the darn CVT gets much better mileage and I hear the engine runs at a much lower RPM with the CVT.
Anyone have any additional thoughts that would sway me to a Subaru?

We replaced or 2000 4runner with a 2.5i Limited Outback back in October and have not looked back. We made a trip from Texas to Durango within the first 1000 miles and it performed awesome in the mountains. We kept the 4runner and I drive it on the weekends still bc my work truck gets 13 mpg. One cool thing is that on my last summer trip to Silverton I saw a handful of older Outbacks up on a trail. So you can still do some moderate exploring in the Outback.

For someone like you, I would test drive the 3.6 model. OR check out the new Acura RDX...less sophisticated AWD, decent ground clearance, plenty of power, and fuel economy splits the difference b/w the Subaru 3.6 and 2.5 CVT.
For me, I am able to hit at least 29 mpg on the highway. And I drive a lot on the highway daily.
