My Safari Snorkel install

"Not responsible for after-market modifications causing damage to vehicle. Oh, and driver error, owner stupidity, acts of God, random acts of kindness, SH!t Happens, Mother Nature, unplanned illness, absence, mental instability, divorce, cheating, spousal abuse, kids, dogs, cats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, accidents, obvious mishaps, un-obvious mishaps, avoidable instances, unavoidable instances, and other duties as assigned"

I think that is the disclaimer found on nearly all parts I have bought....

Marmots need to be added to that one lol.

The testing for this snorkel was a combination of doing a lot of due diligence, and the fact that Safari took FOREVER to finally get it into the injection mold stage.

Out of all the vehicles tested, both before, and after release, this is the only one where ANY damage was incurred due to the product.

However it being responsible is much the same way as saying you set your truck down on a ditch light and it screwed up your hood.
CHILL OUT!

I'm not blaming the snorkel for anything. I never have, please show me where i did and if I did I will retract. You are projecting.

You are the one that said you risk body damage taking it into a car wash. You also risk body damage taking the truck off-road with it... Don't you think it is a bit ironic that a car wash would damage a product designed for off road environments....Just saying... You will encounter much worse in tight terrain.

So, bottom line. It sticks out.. it can induce damage. I think it could be improved on a bit to strengthen the fender by having another attachment point or possibly a support bracket, but whatever.. it is what it is.

I do know the fender is very weak after the hole is cut. That can't be argued.

I also think a touch-less car wash would be fine, except for the water going in.

I have no reason to hate on this snorkel... I'm just trying to give some insight to future users based on first hand experience.

Nah, this is history repeating itself.

I'm not sure how much leverage Lawndart has however on calling out WFO9 for picking poor lines (an accident of sorts) vs Baha driving a very expensive overland rig as though it were a Ford Raptor and damaging things in the process.

In the end people either do stupid shit by accident or on purpose. Damage can result from doing either of the two.

Didn't you two just have this conversation? Or was that someone else. Hell, maybe I'm just starting to see the future now.

Okay I'll bite.

There's a difference between insinuating that a product made damage worse, regardless if you outright say it or not (we can all read between the lines), when you openly admit your driving caused the impact. If it was an accident, then just call a spade a spade, and don't try to come on here and plant the seed that this snorkel will damage your truck as a result. That's a cause and effect that that's lacking in a lot of regards.

However to compare it to Baja? That's stupid. I drove my rig at speeds that were stupid fast and knowingly did so because 1. America is all about hot, nasty badass speed and 2. you can always fix shit after the fact and life is short. Plus when you have a helicopter chasing you and Baja 1000 champions in front and behind you...you tend to pin it.

The only things that failed on my truck was my CBI bumper's swing arms, which failed during terrain where we weren't going fast, and the terrain wasn't anything but moderate.

It's not like I went down there thinking I wouldn't break something. So yes you're right, either you break something from misuse, or USE. And separating out what is a reasonable failure vs "WTF THIS SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED!" is important.

Warning on this snorkel if you wheel your rig hard on tight trails.

I wheel my truck very hard on a regular basis in rocky conditions.. but somehow I've always avoided body damage. Last week I was out on a very tight trail that I have run several times. I was in the lead without a spotter. I thought I had cleared everything as usual, but when I got done I walked around the truck and found that my snorkel had scraped a wall and dented in my fender. I never felt or heard anything....

Anyway... the fender is very weak once this thing is installed. There is no bolt holding the upper portion in place (towards the top of the fender near the front), so if you hit something it will dent the fender right there for sure. I really wish they would have added a stud there as it would have made a huge difference the strength of the fender against minor impacts. I found this problem on my first time out with it on. Sure would be a nice revision, but doubt that will happen.

I was able to get a PDR guy to fix the dent and was able to recondition the snorkel to look decent again.... The rattle can bed liner is a pretty good match to the snorkel finish...

When I read your post above it sounds like your implying there is a significant design flaw that caused your damage and not the act of driving into a rock wall. Please show me where I misunderstood you.

I'll give you the same response I did then.

Not going to get into this with you... Yea, I made a mistake. I'll use different words and call it an opportunity for improvement for when mistakes are made when off-roading. They seem to happen all the time, but maybe it's just me.

Just seems kind of pointless to run armor and what not.. Then have this big bubble in the blind spot on your fender that will dent your fender if it scrapes anything with much force.... One more attachment point would make it much less likely to dent IMHO.

I'm trying to give first hand experience.. nothing I gain out of this. Good luck.

You can keep trolling me and trying to pin me on something.. but it is really counter productive and most people see right through it and ultimately you will just embarrass yourself. Not because I'm smarter or anything... just because I have nothing to gain and will freely admit when I'm wrong. I may be many things... but i'm not a fraud.

BTW, I did not bring up body damage in this thread.... that was LawnDart. When he responded and said you risk body damage.

It seems like he also said the 5th gen snorkel was the only Safari product to produce body damage in a car wash. Did i read that right? Maybe I misunderstood.

I seriously want nothing more than for people to enjoy these trucks and find improvements where flaws or room for improvement exist (which there are many). Ultimately, it is why most people come here.

I suggest a change in tactic... but your call.

If you want to get into a technical discussion about what improvements I think are possible and why.. i would be happy to discuss in PM or whatever.

Oh...my...god, Becky.

I swear to Lord Cthulu you're just being dense. You don't run a snorkel through a carwash because the brush mechanism, you know that big ass thing that spins a lot, follows the contours of the vehicle and can be snagged and do damage.

How dense are you to equate a giant mechanical brush setup with parking your fender into a rock or tree. One is due to negligence and the other is thinking that the profile of your vehicle now conforms to a cleaning system designed for vehicles without stuff protruding off them.

This general safety tip applies to all snorkels, makes and models. Full stop.

I'm just dumb I guess. Wish I was more like you......

BTW, I misunderstood the context of your previous comment. It happens.

What's a T4R post without a couple turds in the punch bowl?.. Maybe it's just the posts I'm reading but there's always some pissing match.

Alright guys. Enough. You both have been here long enough to know the rules. As for your buddy Scharfschütze he can cool it too. So can Atlas4R and pretty much anyone else who wants to pile on or take sides.

You guys both know what to do right? Just move on. Actually it would probably be better to just put each other on your ignore list. Consider all involved in both this thread and the 47th supercharger thread Mag.. TR...UR.. whichever, to end the animosity now, or the ban hammer comes out. Nobody wants to read arguments.

Here is a refresh of the post that helped someone on this thread earlier, let's try to end it on a helpful note:
Here are the part numbers I used to replace the snaps I broke when removing the fender flare and liner:

Snaps_part_numbers.png

(Note, the black gasket is not required and one of the orange part numbers doesn't have the gasket but was the same price as the one that had it)

I broke about 11 of ~14 black ones, 1 of ~6 to 8 blue ones, and 1 of ~4 to 6 orange ones but I could be wrong about the total quantities of each color so it might be a good idea to check inventory at your local stealership before embarking on the snorkel install if you can't afford vehicle down time while you wait. (Or you can order these online, get some generics at a parts store, etc.)
Also, I did not remove the snaps that attach to the front bumper cover. Rather, I just let it sag from that point and I could get full access to the inner fender cavity.

And finally, that template was spot on.

From this post:

yea don't run your snorkel in a automated car wash....that's how I lost my snorkel head, which isn't cheap or easily replaceable.

Thing is, I didn't lose the snorkel head in the car wash itself.... I lost it somewhere down the road after the car wash, driving home from the car wash.

I think the combination soap, pressure washer, brushes, and freeway speed loosened the head enough to where it flew off at freeway speeds going from one freeway exit to another driving home from car wash.

Learn from my very expensive lesson, or you will be like me, and have to tie a sock to the end of it, to keep crap out of your snorkel as you wait for a replacement head.

Heyyy so here's a question. Is the air pump next to the stock air box at risk of taking in water also? What is everyone doing to prevent that?

No. It only operates under cold start until the lambda sensor reaches a certain temperature. Also it blows the air into the exhaust, not your intake.

I suppose getting water in to the pump could cause a premature failure but having water that high in your engine bay is asking for bigger problems than that.
