My truck went crazy after getting lifted... WTF

Okay, I searched and found that some people were hearing from a dealer that a rear lift would cause some options to be canceled, but couldn't find much else. I have a TE with KDSS and all the gadgets. I just had some Icon components installed up front and in the rear. I was there for most of the install and there was some modification necessary for the resi mounts, but there was no damage to other components. They lowered the truck off the lift and like a giddy child I crawled in my newly updated toy. I turned the key and was presented with a beautiful collection of lights on my dash.

Currently, I have the ABS light illumninated on the left. On the right, the 4-Wheel drive green light is blinking, the Multi-terrain select is blinking, and the yellow slipage indicator is illuminated. On the center gauage, there is a banner message that scrolls across the top reading, "Multi-Terrain select is not available."

Please tell me I am not the first person to see this and please help. I read through the user manual and tried to reset anything and everything 4WD related. I have cycled the transfer case through all modes of drive and nothing. I have crawled underneath and seen all connections and everyhting appears to be intact. Anyone with lifts see anything like this?

... I'll post pics in the lifted thread later on. It looks AWESOME!

Have them hook up the laptop. It will identify the open circuit in the ABS system. Most likely the front left/right cables.

So I am understanding this, an ABS failure will cause the 4WD advisory to blink, the multi-terrain select to blink, and the slipage indicator to illuminate? I am hoping this is all it is. The truck looks sweet and I just want everything to be back to normal. I have an appointment at Toyota on Monday to hook up the computer. Fingers crossed, that my $2k suspension install didn't cost another $1k in ABS repairs.:cry2:

Wait a minute... is Antman liking your post, or the fact my truck is screwed up? I am hoping the prior and not the latter. LOL
NO WAY DUDE!! I am liking the fact that this Forum is so awesome, and full of people that know their stuff while not being too proud to help!!

Gees!!! I hope your truck gets fixed ASAP, I would be sick to my stomach over it. (that's why nobody touches my truck (except Sp8ball) if I can help it.) :bigok:

It's most likely(survey says 99%) going to be one of these two ABS harnesses with the bad wire especially if you didn't see them take them loose.
The harness is about a 10 minute swap and the shop that did your lift should be held liable.
Harness, Front Sensor
R 89516-60260 $58.05msrp and $43.09 from ToyotaPartSales dot com
L 89516-60270 $58.05msrp $43.09

NOTE:You have to watch dealerships as they will try to sell you the abs sensor with the harness,at least they did with others, and it is big bucks.

Okay, the stealership is indeed telling me that the left front ABS speed sensor wiring harness is damamged. They are quoting me $156 dollars for the repair. I called the shop that installed the lift and they want to do the repair as opposed to pay for Toyota to complete it. Is this a difficult i.e. Toyota certified mechanic repair, or is this pretty simple? Is it likely that the right side is also damaged and should I just get both cables/sensors replaced to be safe? Thanks for all the input.

I had the same issue, but before I splurged and bought the new piece, I took off my sensor wire found the break and spliced it and shrink wrapped it. The removal and reinstall took maybe 10 min. the splice took about 15 min. And I am all good again.

I did the same, spliced in another 3" of wire on each side too, at full droop that cable gets pretty damn tight!

First, thanks as always for your very helpful postings.

This is exactly what happend to me: the wiring harness was pulled too tightly during or after the lift and my dash now looks like a Vegas slot machine sans octogenarian at the helm.

The auto shop shop is actually very well run and quite competient; I can understand their mistake. With me citing THIS THREAD :biggrin2: they said they would make all well with my truck free of charge. They did ask the question "what is to prevent it from happing again when the truck is on the lift?" I'm not sure of the answer. Is it that a longer wire must be spliced into the harness, or is it that the harness can be attached in a way that makes it less tight, or is it something else? Sorry to be such a dolt, but I want to make sure everyone is well informed so I don't have to go through this again. I also want it done right.

Thanks

There are 4 clamps held on with 10mm bolts that can be taken loose to give it enough slack.
You can get by with just taking the middle 2 loose really. The one on the UCA and the top one on the spindle.

Glad you got it worked out! Slightly off topic but now that your problem is fixed please tell us who/what you know in order to land an ICON stage "2.5" as your sig says (I'm assuming that means everything in the stage 2, with the remote res front shocks as you mentioned reservoir mounting in your first post) for "$2000."

Even if the $2000 number is a ballpark, which I'm sure it is, that setup should run at least $3,100 by my calculations. (using Demello Offroad pricing which is the best I've found so far)

Did you make a deal with God?

What kind of wire did you guys use to splice it? Just regular coated copper wire?

Good thing this thread came up. I am about to lift mine.

You can buy anything from Icon separate instead of stages as they put them in their stage packages just to make it easy .Demello used to give 20% off, but not anymore I've been told as I paid less then $2K for my front and rear remote res's.Here is dRGNpHNX's post on his ICONS ...... http://www.toyota-4runner.org/781373-post393.html

You won't need to splice it unless you break it.Buying new for $43 rather then splicing would be my advice anyways on a mas importante ABS wire if it breaks . The signal it's getting thru that wire could save a life.
Remove the clamps and the wires won't break. Put them back on after the CO install and they are plenty long enough.

This is exactly what I did this last weekend when I lifted mine, never had an issue with dash lights. The best advise I can give and what has been given in multiple threads is pay attention to all the wires when you start disconnecting things. I just removed the cable clamp from the brake line and the abs sensor at the spindle and had more then enough slack.
I also replace my rear springs with longer ones and even with the rear brake line bracket disconnected and slack availiable I still had to get them alittle tight to get the new springs installed.
Take your time and watch everything and you shouldnt damage anything. Now if you have someone else do it then you are going to have to trust that they will do it right or deal with the headache of trying to get them to pay to fix it.

This is why I love this site so much, great knowledge and insights from folks that have actually experienced these things.
