My wife's catalytic converter was cut off her 14 limited

Catalytic converter thieves usually don't use sawzalls as they are far too loud. Usually, they are using something like this: https://www.amazon.com/GearWrench-2...=1487663015&sr=8-1&keywords=Chain+Pipe+Cutter because they are quiet to operate. There was a lot of this going on in NM for a while, now they just take the whole vehicle.

I guess I go to the wrong scrap yards. I took my buddys catalytic converter to the scrap yard (he legitimately replaced it on his Honda Pilot). They scanned my drivers license and record how many you recycle. I'm guessing if you brought in one a week, you're be flagged.

I have aluminum skid plates under the entire 4Runner. My luck is the A-holes would steal my aluminum AND catalytic converter.

I am so sorry. I know how much it hurts to have your vehicle vandalized and have stuff stolen from you. We had a rash of these kinds of thefts at my office 6 years ago. Turns out they were hitting the entire North side of San Antonio.

...it got to the point that the local recyclers stopped accepting catalytic converters.

I wouldn't worry about a lock on it. I would just get a really good full length skid plate. Think of it as the perfect opportunity for UPGRADE TIME!!!

4Runners are some of the easiest vehicles to steal cats from. They are high off the ground and offer a ton of space to work with underneath. Oh, and they have a huge cat with platinum in it.

Sorry that happen. My son 2001 4Runner's catalytic converter was taken a few years ago. They also got 3 or 4 other cars near him.

many do have multiple driving licenses where I live. one illegal immigrant felon had 15 or so...how he got them was an employee at the DMV. .

with the traffic in the boston area many park at lots 20 miles from the boston downtown area .. these lots are state property at the hywy ramp areas.

one time my family member using this on a typical carpool group saw several vehicles all had the cat converters cut off. mostly GM and other trucks easy to get under and cut off. most had to pay $500 deductible for the damage. state police now patrol these areas and found these low lifes doing this .

ya they would take those skid plates and the cats...

lots of heroin in my area they take them DOA to the hospital every day ...need the cash.

Happened to a guy I work with too, in broad daylight at our office. He has a Tundra, so I'm sure it was even easier for the crooks to get under there.

Happened to me twice on my 3rd gen! Cost my insurance $2700 each time since I wanted factory parts (didn't want smog check issues in Cali) and the thieves decided to cut o2 sensor wiring and flanges on the header and exhaust sides so those pipes needed to me replaced as well!

Got full skids after that! Didn't happen again. I hate thieves.

Early last year my wife came out from her Crossfit class to our Sequoia sounding like a flatbottom race boat. Called me and said something is wrong with the muffler, I had her start it while I was on the phone, no Angel, the Cat's have been stolen.

Yes, "plural" the Sequoia has two Catalytic Converters. $4800 replacement, luckily we had insurance.

Our car was within sight of the front door of a gym in a busy intersection.......Bastards

3 other Sequoia's and 2 Tundra's got hit within 48 hours around town

Now that I see the 4Runners can be targets it will be easier for the wife to understand the need for a new skid plate!

I've already filed a police report and an insurance claim, it's going to cost us $250, but more importantly it's a pain in the ass to get fixed with our schedules.

If they haven't processed the claim yet, you may want to rethink it. Yes it will save you money out of pocket, but how much are those scum insurance companies going to raise your rates over the next 3+ years. Your $2500 repair could easily cost you the same or more in the long run.

You are basically filing a claim where the insurance company has very little chance of reclaiming money from another company or individual. That means the money has to come from somewhere and that somewhere will most likely be you.

While it may suck in the short term, you may be better off to not file a claim and work with your local dealer directly. Dealers will often help out customers that are doing work and not going through insurance.

Mine got stolen off of my 96 4runner in my work parking lot. We had security cameras and watched the entire thing (after the fact, of course). The guys who did it were smooth. They completely blocked the cameras. We couldn't even see anyone climb under the runner. A truck pulled up in front of my car, you could see the rear door open, and a few seconds later they pulled off. About 4 minutes later the truck pulls back up and the rear door opens again and the truck pulls off. At no point could you see someone under or near my 4runner.

So it turns out they are on video stealing it at 4:30 in the afternoon. You can't identify them, but you can see it happen. Amazing that they did it so close to 5:00 when people start to leave work.

Our deductible is $250 and her work is paying half the out of pocket cost. USAA is picking up the rental car, but we have to cover insurance for the rental. Biggest thing that makes me mad is USAA won't use OEM parts since is "old" (2014). I know a weld in cat will be fine, but it bothers me. We may pay out of pocket for OEM if it's not to much more than insurance will reimburse, helps that her boss is covering half. Also, USAA said the insurance premium shouldn't change as long as we don't have any other claims for a while since we've been with them for a while and have no claims.

I would look into doing it without insurance then. An aftermarket cat shouldn't cost that much more than your deductible and the labor should be minimal. Not sure if your state has emissions testing but when I swapped mine for an aftermarket one it did not play well with the o2 sensors and caused a check engine light to come on after a few hundred miles. This gave me issues every time I had to get an inspection.

My converter was stolen in a Sam's parking lot that was very busy. I asked Sam's about checking the security cameras . They did not . Filled out police report which was a waste of time . Had a mom and pop shop put on a converter for $300. Mechanic told me they are stolen daily and police can't/won't do anything. I was in Sam's less than 15 minutes. Only bought one item.

My condolences to anyone who's ever had this happen. I had no idea that this was even a "thing". I'm honestly baffled...i guess i shouldn't be (sadly).
