Mystery sound

It has nothing to do with XREAS. Do you have a switch on the center console that lets you change the height of the runner (option on either the SE and limited). If not the noise is not from the suspension air compressor because you don't have one.

no I do not have a switch but I think the other gentleman's point was that the XREAS has it's own bells and whistles one of which is a device which could have made the noise.........at least that is what I think he said........

Nope XREAS uses fluid to adjust the shocks, kind of like a brake system. No electronics involved. Do a search about further info on the system.

Do I detect some sarcasm; If you read back through my reponses, I've been trying to help you isolate the reason for the noise.
 
no. no sarcasm. I just thought that you know what it is not so you might know what it is.

If i had been sarcastic i probably would have said smarty pants or smart boy or something similar.

just trying to figure out why there is a small dental like drill sound in my cabin... any ideas appreciated and since you seem to know a lot..... :bigok:
 
My "dental like drill sound" is most definately sunroof related....... happened very often when the truck was brand new.. now it seems to be going away.

Unlike you, this only happened when my roof was open all the way.
 
People ignoring me I see. I have that electrical "Whirling" noise. I hear it everytime I slow down to crawl. Nothing to worry about. Seems like everyone has it. Nobody knows what though. =P

Alaskaman, my 2002 4runner has the same problem. It happens sparactically. I hear a small dentist drill (good description on your part) in the lower front passenger side. Interestingly enough I haven't heard it in a week or so but here's my latest problem and I'm not sure if it's related. So I'm looking for some input. Yesterday, I had the cabin fan on. I turned it to the off position but the fan stays on at the lowest speed so it's not annoying but i can still tell it's on if i don't have the radio turned up. It does shut off after I turn off the car. Does anyone have any advise.
 
I think that it is the sunroof at least in my case. the sunroof when open or partially open makes small adjustments and the dentist drill sounds occurs......I believe one of the posters here got it right.
 
I thought that it was so I repeated the drive with open and closed and when the sunroof was open I heard the sound so I must have been mistaken.........:beer:
 
Well, I've read through all these so I think my idea here is new (that's a switch on this forum)!
Could it be your ABS system pump kicking on and off? I haven't noticed that in this ride, but my '95 Civic EX made the noise from time to time. It could be adjusting pressure in the system or something. I believe the ABS system is on the driver's side (I'm not sure). Can you discern where the sound is coming from exactly?
This is just a guess, hopefully to get some more comments and therefore more knowledge about your predicament:cool: .
