Napa Steering Rack

Have you tried putting a tack weld on the steering column? A lot of guys say it helps a lot.

I have also checked that column. It is fine, solid. I can actually move both tires independently to each other about 1-2"s as if the ITRE's are completely gone. The only thing that blows my mind is if I brake really hard the steering seems to tighten up until I release the brakes. If Im stopped and hit the brakes it stays loose. If I hold the brakes while moving and gasing the steering seems solid. I just cant figure it out at all.

In topic that I opened in this forum , one guy said about SAFARI LTD. Do them knows? They sell steering rack and that guy says good about them!

Does that is better than the OEM or NAPA to use with big tires, up to 33" or 35"?

OEM is best. LTD makes one thats pricey and you must call them to order it. For just a little more you can go OEM. I saw your other post. If you plan on running over 35" tires you should look into a solid axle swap.
 
DONT BUY TOYOTASTEERING.COM RACK AND PINION. Just pulled the boots off and both ITRE's have about 2inches of play. This was like this new, because Ive had loose steering since install. Im putting my OEMs back in till I can get some new ones but the 200k OEMS are still solid.

Also I wouldnt mind the rack if they would answer phone calls, or emails for my warranty. They are ignoring me completely and has been over a month. I will make a hate thread on them soon enough. Time to go finish fixing my rig.
 
That sucks ! especially since you are now having to do this work a total of three times in order to get your front end where you want to be in the end .note to self :Take toyotasteering.com off the list of parts to use .Thanks for the heads up

Yea for sure, I am going to keep trying to contact them to see if they will give me a credit for the bad ITRE's.

So went to install my old oems and found the one side is completely bent from when my LBJ broke. So I went and bought a cheap $30 parts store tie rod end. Going to post a pic later, it does not have as much droop at all. Im going to install oem one side and non oem on the other and see if this one fails quickly after some rock crawling.

But good thing is my steering is solid as a rock for the first time in a very very long time!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't run the cheap one if you are going to go rock crawling. If it has less droop, then you are going to stress the rack on that side and cause leaking way prematurely.

If you already know about that, then sorry to repeat it, but I'd hate to see you mess up your rack by using crap ITRE's so soon after a long struggle to fix it.
 
stay away from NAPA

As a professional mechanic I have seen the rack and pinions from them at about a 95% fail rate most were immediate fails. In particular went thru 4 back to back in less than a week on my 2000 4runner and wound up going to another vender who did a price match for a perfect end result. So in a nutshell unless your trying to get a lot of practice doing rack R&R don't use NAPA

I see what your saying but I have had the crap ones in there for over a year with many offroading trips the rack is perfectly fine. Just the tie rod ends are gone. When I have the $120 each for the oem ones I will get them but for now I will have to stick with this. Not to mention again this is an issue from the rack company and should all be under warranty. I guess it may be worth spending the $650 or whatever it is for an oem rack.

I don't think OEM is better. Can be better if you will use original tires. With the big tires it breaks!

Use a solid axle brakes is my plan, but even so if I put the solid axle swap I'll need the steering rack. Isn't it?

Keep in mind that most OEM steering racks are very old. Once you install the larger tires is when they give up. A new OEM steering rack would hold up. No larger than 35's in my opinion though.

Usually in a solid axle swap the steering is converted to recirculating ball system with a steering box from a Land Cruiser or another vehicle.

Perfect this revenue, T4R2014! hehe But I think that is impossible here in Brazil!

Can you show exactly what pieces I have to use to do this?
