NAV Off Road Maps

Hey all,

I'm wondering if it's possible to install Off Road Trail Maps into the Navigation system, or if i'm stuck reading trail maps from REI forever. I'm new to this Off Roading thing, and any info would be awesome, thanks!

No offroad maps that I know of for Toyota. Here is something that could help.

I used an Etrex for years but due to an, um, "unfortunate" wreck on my bike last year my family makes me take a personal satellite locator beacon with me now lol. That, and I know where I am going.

I use my iPad 3G which comes with the agps chip and run motion X mounted to the seat bolt with a joy factory carbon fiber mount, love the setup.

Having a GPS map is handy, but make sure you have a good old-fashioned paper map of the area as well that you know how to read and use properly. A GPS can lose signal, die after getting water into it, or otherwise fail so don't rely solely on it. Also, if you're new to off roading make sure to avoid travelling alone. Never know what you're going to get into out there and you may not have cell service. I keep a SPOT in the truck no matter where I'm going.

Motion-X is an AWESOME value. I just found out how much work they put into it from the first time I tried it a couple of years ago. It's amazing how much they give you for $2.99.

I agree, for 2.99 you get some really nice features along with a great graphical user interface and practically no bugs that I have found so far.

Not that I am aware of, but my avatar pic was taken on a road the integrated GPS claimed was a 'county highway'. That was bad enough on the skidplates and the bottom of my trailer hitch.

Later that day I drove down another road, similarly indicated on GPS, that apparently was considered to be an ATV-only thing by the locals. For laughs, I rolled up to said locals, and asked them whether this was the way to the Starbucks I had entered into my my nav unit. Their looks were priceless, since it was deep, deep West Virginia.

Mike, does Motion X require a 3g iPad? I went cheap and bought the one with only wi-fi because I never really need the remote access. If Motion X is really that cool, its not too late for me to return this and get the 3g, I just hate another $50/month. Yes, I am cheap on stuff like this, I think it is the fleecing of America to connect us to monthly charges. Let me know though because I really think the iPad can replace the laptop in overlanding. If however, I can download the map and connect an external gps antenna to track me on a downloaded map with my wi-fi version, I would be all over it. Please clue me in.

For overlanding, you'll likely want the 3G version but probably not for the reason you're thinking.

The WiFi only iPads do not have a GPS chipset. Only the 3G/4G models have GPS chipsets. So, your WiFi-only iPad will be pretty useless for navigating off-road unless you found a Bluetooth GPS chipset/antenna that was compatible with the iPad or there were a ton of known WiFi hotspots along your route to get a decent timing advance.

On the data side, Motion-X has two products: Motion-X Drive (which requires an active Internet connection for maps at all times) and Motion-X GPS HD (which does NOT require an Internet connection at all times for maps). For Motion-X GPS HD you can download the topographic/street/maritime maps you need for a specified region and use them offline.

I have an iPad 1 3G, but I never use the native 3G on it (nor do I pay for it). With Motion-X GPS HD I can simply download the maps I need before I leave and use the internal GPS on the iPad to navigate (I have an iPad Ram mount that I install for trips).

OK, got it. Does the newest latest version of iPad have the GPS gizmo in the wi-fi only version? I bought my first iPad about a week or so ago before release of the new one and the girl said I could bring it back for an exchange if I wanted to, so I just want to be sure I exchange for the correct item.

Downloaded MotionX GPS last night and messed with it for a bit. Very cool interface, very functional. Went ahead and downloaded a terrain map with a radius of most of north georgia and into the smokies a bit... with a level 15 zoom, it only took up about 750MB.

For iPads 1, 2, and 3, only the models with a Wifi+3G or Wifi+4G(LTE) data feature have the AGPS (assisted GPS) chip. The GPS chip in these versions of the iPad will work without a data connection but you will need an app that stores map data (images) on the device.

You could trade it in for ipad2 with Wifi+3G and save some money...the new one can run a bit hot and takes considerably longer to charge, I'd imagine neither of those things would benefit you in an offroad vehicle.
