Morning all. My nav started saying, "unable to read data. Please check if the map DVD is correct".Has anyone else experienced this? Disc is perfectly clean and only has been ejected once I saw this warning.

That same messages flashes on my unit but goes away after a few seconds and the GPS DVD begins to load...it has done it with both the original GPS DVD and the pirated GEN 6 disc i currently have loaded.

Sorry, have had my 2010 Limited since it came out and have never received that error. I did upgrade my nav dvd last year though.

Unfortunately this is a quirk of Toyota's Navigation system. Not entirely sure why they designed it like this, but they did.

When the Navigation Head Unit loads up, if is unable to read the disc (be it the disc being bad or the head unit being bad) it will not load into any other function until the disc read error is corrected; which in my opinion was a poor programming choice on Toyota's part.

Unfortunately the bad new doesn't stop there, a lot of times we've seen that it's either the disc or the head unit. I would see if you can make a DvD from your current gen map software (for diagnostic purposes I would try not to use an updated disc as they overwrite the data on the head unit and won't want to use older discs in a lot of our systems) this way you can rule out the DvD being the issue.

If you can't get one or make one, you can try sticking a plain music CD in the map slot and starting the vehicle up. The error should change to something along the lines of "incorrect format," this way you can see whether or not the head unit is even looking at the disc. I've had a few dead units that didn't even bother responding with a different disc or CD and we had to replace the entire unit.

bump

It is at the dealer now. Hopefully it is just the disc or something. Now I have lost all controls, no audio, no maps, no phone, and the screen is blank. Can't wait to find out the bill on this one.

Bump

Just heard back. Dealer said unit went bad, $3,100 to replace. Another dealer quoted me $2,300.

Any suggestions?

On my last vehicle I had my nav unit die - $3800 replacement part. I was able to find a specialized shop that disassembled and refurbished my old unit for $600. A bit cheaper than getting an aftermarket with the same features. It might be worth some searching to see if you can find someone like that.

Any available from wrecking yards?

I have called several yards, and so far nothing avail. I check eBay about every single day for 5th gens being parted out and then i call on them. My main purpose was to get the Limited/Trail gauges for my SR5 but every time i find one (about ever 2-3 weeks) the gauges are already sold. Makes me wonder if anyone on here has made the swap.

Anyway, I'm still hunting for a replacement nav. I did call a repair shop that fixes them in CA. I was quoted $550 for R&R to replace the DVD drive (a common problem according to them).

I'm trying to find out if i can plug a 2013 entune unit in place of thi sone, but i have not been able to get a picture of the back of the entune unit to compare. If I am going to hunt down a replacement head unit, I would like a small upgrade.

Nav help???

Having some random Nav issues, it starts up fine but is randomly resetting. Basically cuts out for a couple seconds while screen goes dark then get start up picture and right back to music station it was on. This doesn't seem like a Nav disc issue. It's happening a couple times per commute basically, don't think it is temperature related as happening when freezing and warm. No mods done since last fall and even then my rigid lights are completely separate from factory wiring. A sign of impending failure?
TOY2G did you end up just going aftermarket?

It did you a favor. The navigation units suck so bad I bought a garmin. Looks pretty stupid when people ride with me but it's totally useless imo.
