Navigation Traffic Question - 2014 SR5 Premium

I have read the manual's section on traffic several times and can't get something clear. It seems like the traffic feature only works on previously defined routes, unless I'm reading this wrong. On a typical GPS, you enter in your destination, and the GPS automatically notifies you of traffic backups, and (automatically or manually) reroutes around. Does this not work this way on the 4runners GPS? Did toyota complicate this, or am I over thinking it?

Basically my question is: If I type in my destination and go, will the GPS notify me of traffic backups? (fyi, just assume I am in an area where the traffic info is broadcasting, and I'm getting data via bluetooth from my iPhone).

I just took a trip recently to south Florida. Along my route, my NAV system notified me of lane closures or construction areas.
Along the side of your route displayed you will see a green line yellow line or red line alerting you to the traffic condidtion.
I cannot say if your NAV system will re-route you or not, mine never did as there were no delays from these construction areas or closures. That's a good question about re-routing!

I'm almost 100% positive your NAV is totally independent and does not use you iphone bluetooth for NAV function at all.

If you find a answer from Toyota of another reliable source, please post it about the re-routing!

Thanks for that. That is good news to me. So all you did was type in your destination an drive, and the green/yellow/red lines were automatically there?

If I find out about the re-routing, I will post it. I did find an option in the settings asking if I wanted re-routing to be manual (which was default selected), automatic, or off. I will look into that more. I would go out and tell you where it is in the menu now, but my wife took off somewhere.

I found in the manual that the navigation is 100% independent of the Bluetooth, but the traffic data is not. The traffic data is radio broadcast in certain areas. If the signal is not there, it gets it from your phones data connection via Bluetooth. These cars are turning into one big complicated computer. Ugh.

The green/yellow/red lines are there on the NAV routes whenever the screen is on. It will show traffic conditions regardless. You do not have to select a route for this to happen.

I will have to re-read my manual on the routing options in the settings!

I have had the nag (just auto corrected from nav so I'll leave it) reroute or attempt to reroute me due to traffic. Usually it will verbally tell me about traffic or something and then if I glance over it sometimes has a pop-up window to select a new route. Some of the roads / interchanges don't feed the nav good data so it might think the freeway is slow when it is really the frontage road that is clogged or vice versa so I have a tendency to ignore it in my neighborhoods since I know the traffic patterns. I also find that the traffic data is maybe 20+ minutes out of date...YMMV.

I havent had the NAV re-route me yet.. I have been in nasty LA traffic and it just gives a warning about stop and go.

I usually just re-route myself.. LOL

I havent seen this come up on my GPS. but maybe Ohio doesnt have the same amount of traffic as some of you guys. We just get orange barrels..
