Navigation update question

I actually find the NAV system to work fairly well. Works as well or better than most of the portable Garmin or Tom Tom systems I've had in the past. It's not as accurate and updated as Google Maps or Waze and the traffic is decent but obviously not as up to the minute as Waze. I like the POI integration and the way you can add symbols to the maps....to show all the Dunkin Donuts, as an example.

Anyway....have any of you done the updates? I have a 2016 SR5 premium and the current NAV software is dated May of 2015. I had heard that they issue an update each May. Is that correct? Has anyone had the update done at the dealership and, if so, what was the cost? I've seen the updates for sale on eBay...they offer the memory card. Are these any good? Anyone used them? Are they legit and it is as simple as just plugging in the new card? Thanks.

I haven't, nor do I even know if mine's outdated ('16 as well). My Acura TL uses DVD's to read maps off of so it'd be cool if it's just an SD card swap.

You can check the NAV version in your settings. Mine is dated May of 2015 and I heard the updates come out every May. I read somewhere that Toyota charges around $150 for an update. All the NAV info is stored on the micro SD card in your dash unit. I'm guessing they just swap out the old card and hit a few buttons to update.
