wow- I never made it back here to post the photos- oops! I've done Jawbone to Lake Isabella and last week did northern end of Death Valley then across to SanFran- holy **** DV is ==awesome==. I figure all the years I've been in the deserts I didn't go to DV bc I didn't have my 4R yet!! 
In terms of supplies and such- I had no probs at all. I was able to test the limits in Dove Springs and see how inadequate my tires are. I never came close to needing the extra gas- though it did save me some time the day I finished the Mojave Road- I said screw it I'm not going home and spent a few days in Joshua Tree. The day I finished Mojave Rd I ended up in JT on Berdoo Canyon at night- doh! once I was in Coachella at the truck stop i was just laughing I was so tired and it was so absurd. And I aired my tires down to 20psi in DV washboard roads were SO much nicer! the $20 pos DC compressor I got did the job but it took at least 30 or 40 min to get all the tires back up- slooow.
I also am considering this spare gas container that fits on a roof rack. i'm not even going to tell you where I stored the 5gal can I brough with me so don't ask.

Sweet pics, looks like a good time. Looks like you figured out what to bring. Always plan for the best and prepare for the worst. 2 days of food and water for a one day trip, extra fluids for the truck, as complete set of tools that is reasonable to pack, extra clothes, a blanket or sleeping bag and driving shoes/boots (trying to drive with 2" of slick mud on the bottom of boots isn't fun), blanket, lighter, first aid and the all mighty shovel. I recently had some friends come through from out of town and I went for an "easy" little trip to show them some mountain trails. Was doing a trail I had done the DAY before, found some mud and that's when I uttered those classic last words, "doesn't look that deep". Apparently the boys on 40"s had been through to play after I left... Thank god for the shovel.

One thing is I want this gas "can": Gasoline Fuel Packs : Gasoline Containers : RotopaX.com
4gal or gas/water combo- have to see how they would fit using stock roof rack.
I'm pretty good at packing extras and such- but experience is by far the best thing. The cheapo compressor I got seems like it could fail any time- and it's brand new- just super cheap build quality. Other things I learn along the way as to how important they are. Also is getting set places where you keep things. I need to get better storage containers for the rear but man- those were a fluke and best thing i have ever done- keeping things organized and clean and so forth. One for food, one for clothes, one for emergency items and tools, etc.
One item I thought about was the tire plug kit I got. Would work for nails and small punctures like that but driving up Lippincott over crazy rocks I was thinking if I got a flat that way the plug kit would likely be useless.

You forgot the partridge in the pear tree.
Regarding the compressor: As you found out, the chief drawback of cheapie compressors is how long they take to air up big tires (they work fine on little Hondas and Subarus with 13" wheels.)
I've been using the Masterflow MV50 (sometimes called the MV1050) for about 3 years now and I'm really impressed with it. It's a bit more expensive than a cheap cigarette-lighter compressor, but not that much more. You can usually find them for around $60 at 4wd shops (some people have scored deals on them at Costco but I never saw them for sale when I was a Costco member.)
How fast is it? Well, I'll put it this way: It takes me longer to air down than to air back up. :frisky:

Thanks- how is the build quality? That is even more important to me. But again- I wasted precious late daylight on getting my tires from 20psi to 29 and 32psi- literally like 30 or 45min I think. Maybe not that long but wow was it slow. Oh and the gauge was off by over 10psi or more.
