Need advice: Keep or Sell? What is a reasonable sale price?

Hi fellow 4Runner Entusiasts. I am having a hard time making up my mind regarding my 4Runner; whether to keep it or sell it.

Some background: I am about to deploy for about 10 months and the truck will be garaged (wife generally starts it once a week to run the engine to operating temp). Upon return next summer, I am more than happy to keep this truck and I am sure it will last me for a long time. There is another part of me (and my wife) that would like to sell it right now (when I can get a good price) and upon return, possibly get a redesigned 2019.

If you were in my shoes, would you keep or sell it.

What is a reasonable private party sale price, here are the specs:

1 Owner 2011 SR5...~97K Miles (Mostly highway)...4x4...OME Lift kit with Total Chaos UCA's. Tires have ~25K with 25 to 30K left on them...TRD Wheels...Satoshi Grill...and Rosen Nav system. Vehicle very well maintained...Full Synthetic Oil Change/Tire rotation every 5K...Alignment every 15K...All services done at dealership per toyota maintenance schedule...Zero Mechanical issues. paint looks great (few scratches here and there but zero door dings; dents; etc). Interior is very clean and well maintained. See a few attached pictures.

So What do you all think? Keep or sell. I am leaning more towards keep (too many good memories and cool spots), wife towards sell. And if sell, what would be a reasonable sale price private party. I am leaning around $21-22K (Central Valley, California). Local dealer offered $18K on the spot and that's what got me thinking.

As far as the 4runner. With all of the BS I'm hearing about the 6th Gen 4Runner I'd rather keep my 5th Gen.

I think if don't need to sell it don't but if you can sell it and make money from it and that will help the family while gone than do what you have to do for your family.

I would keep it. The next generation of 4Runner very well may be a glorified mini-van. Unless that is your thing?

10 months is not long at all, I would keep it. I would keep it regardless of how long deployed unless you planned on staying out of the US for several years.

Personally, I can't take the angry looking new front end style of bumper of the 2014+ models. You've invested a lot in that rig already, why start all over again?

Another vote to keep it!! I just traded my 17 Taco in today for a 17 4RP, and if they put in the 3.5 and 6 spd tranny from the current Gen 3 Taco's in the next Gen 4R's, I think you might regret selling your current 4R. Appreciate your service and sacrifice as well.....Take care...

I garaged a truck for two years while I was over there 13 years ago that I was still paying off, just to sell it when I got home to catch up on things left unattended and start life over. I could have had two years worth of truck payments in my pocket had it not been there "waiting" for me. If it is not paid off I'd vote sell it and use what little Uncle Sam pays you to support the family.

If it is sitting there free and clear then I would not consider selling it at all. Consider it a second vehicle for momma and financial insurance policy that has a delayed liquidity (meaning $20-24k in the bank spends REALLY easy and fast if one felt so inclined, but if the family NEEDS that kind of money they have to go through the process of selling a vehicle first, delaying the process a bit causing one to sleep on it a few days at least.)

Consider: Your mods are worth little on resale. You never, ever, come out financially good on selling/rebuying. Do you really want to start the mods over? Curious why the wife says sell? It IS important to consider the wife's opinion - they are smarter than we are you know.

Recently, I was set on buying a new one, even test driving, wife said do it, I have the money, but I just don't NEED it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with mine, so why? This week I have appointments for some long-term maintenance, and I'm just going to keep it. Hell, it will outlast me. So, yesterday I bought her a new car.

The decision to sell or keep ultimately comes down to your current financial needs and obligations. If you are still paying on it and need the payments for other things, then it might be wise to sell. If it is paid for and would just be sitting there with the only payment while deployed being the insurance, it might be better to keep it.

I noted that you indicated you might be interested in buying a 2019 when you get back from the deployment. My question would be, if you need funds now, are you really going to be able to afford buying a 2019 when you get back?

I served in the Navy from 1985-1991 (ET2 Nuke) :hello: and left my truck in outdoor storage for 6 months under a canvas cover during a deployment to the gulf. It started up fine when I got back and I kept it for several more years.

So, basically it comes down to your needs and obligations.

Looks like you've rigged it the way you want it. Selling, rebuying and re equipping is a $ losing proposition whenever you do it. If it's paid for and your family not short of $ during your deployment, I'd keep it and have it waiting on return. Thanks for your service and God Speed.

I did come across this decision once years ago, when I was about to get stationed overseas. I had an 1996 F-350, real nice with a leveling kit and nice Weld wheels and all.

Issue was it had a lot of miles, and most importantly, it was not fitting my needs any more being a single cab and all. I was going to be overseas for three years (ended up being five years) and had no one to really take care of it, so it would just sit anyway.

I decided to sell it, which I did have a bit of regret for a while because I had so many memories in it, but realized it was best because after I came back to the US, I would have basically had an F-350 that did not meet my needs, lots of miles, and worth probably much less than what I got for it. The person I sold it to enjoyed the heck out of and sold it to someone who treats it like a princess.

When my '02 sport was paid for I wanted to run it forever. Made it over 16 years before the weather got it at 189000 mi. Best vehicle I ever owned hands down, still got $6300 as an insurance total due to water lunching the computer and main wiring harness after a Nor-easter. Everything else was running like clockworks when the electronics died. My bride of 40 years always complained about the stiff suspense at low speed, but it could handle any road or weather condition. If you come back North, have the frame and undercarraige powerwashed and sprayed with a waxlike under coat like Amsoil HD, before the snow flies.

If it's paid for it will not lose much in value over time.
