Need advice on correcting steering wheel

FIXED
Installed a new ( to me) steering rack / pinion yesterday. In a attempt to correct my off-centered steering wheel I not only adjusted the toe-in toe-outs on my tie rods but also moved the steering wheel a little, which was one adjustment too many. I really only needed to correct the tie rods.
So far I loosened the two 12mm spline bolts on the steering shaft, BUT I'm unable to push the coupler up far enough to make to corrections I need.
After numerous searches, others said that they have been able to push the coupler up to make adjustments.
The only fix I can think of right now is dropping the R/P again just to make a 2 degree correction!!
Steering wheel is sitting a 2:30pm, too far for my comfort.
WHAT am I doing wrong? Anybody got ideas?

did you not align the bolts back up correctly when you hooked back up the steering shaft?

Exactly, purposely though. I was trying to correct what the alignment shop did.
All's fixed now, put a little more muscle into it and it came loose like a $2 whore. Tires and steering wheel are now straight, off to get another alignment.
