Need Advice

Hi everyone. I'm new here and am seeking some advice from knowledgeable people. I recieved a 1998 4runner about 7-8 months ago and have decided that I want to make some upgrades, but without breaking the bank. It's a Limited. I see so many 4runners everyday and just want to stand out a little.

So far I've just added a new CD player and a couple of subs.

I'm probably going to either match the stock tint on the front windows or get 20% all the way around. Does anyone know how matching the stock looks? Is it fairly dark?

I was also thinking about adding a new muffler or exhaust system and maybe a cold air intake. These are probably the two most popular upgrades I suppose, but I had a few questions.

Would just adding a new muffler improve the sound of the car? Is it easy to install these or if not how much would a shop charge me?

Is the cold air intake worth it? I would gain about 5-9 HP? Aren't these about $200 shipped? How difficult are these to install? And once again how much would a shop charge me?

Are there any other upgrades that are better in the same price range?

Thanks for you help.

Edit: I also thought about smoked taillights and headlights. How would I go about getting these?

That's right. Go Tigers. I might be going there in two years, but back on track.

I'm probably just looking for cosmetics with good sound. I don't really care about serious offroading(Well it would be fun, but is expensive). I may just get into a little mud every now and then.

Who does the deckplate mod? Price?

Better gas millage would also be nice. So would a few more HP.

In summation, good sound, no lifts or bigger tires(right now), and maybe a few cosmetics.

deckplate is a boat thing, dunno where you live, but west marine carries them, basically you drill a hole in the front of the airbox, place int eh deckplate lid, and the deckplate itself can screw in and out, in for small water crossings and mud, out for good sound and a little more throttle response

vortex cherrybomb or the dynoflow (i think?) muffler is a good option for deep sound, stay away from magnaflow, too throaty and doesnt sound right.

That's some good info. I just read up a little on the deckplate mod and it looks fairly easy, but I did notice that if you mess up the housing it costs like $800. So you pretty much just buy the deckplate then cut a hole and put some mesh over it and some sealant(sp?)?

Good advice on the muffler also. I wouldn't need to have a complete exhaust system? Any idea on how much it costs to install a muffler?

And about the headlights and taillights. Can you just order those from ebay and pretty much bolt them in? Are they street legal?

Thanks.

if you mess up the deckplate, a new airbox is only like 50 bucks, dunno about 800 bucks now.

just take out the airbox, take out maf sensor( make sure its in a safe place)

cut the hole and then clean out the airbox, seal up the deckplate ring, and good to go, i dont have mesh in mine

You've been a lot of help man. One last question that I can think of. Where can you get the auctual deckplate? They run about $10?

Thanks.

That looks really nice. Would you say it's worth the extra money as oposed to the deckplate mod?
Hell yeah man, I could definitely notice an increase in HP. And the sound... is amazing, sounds like a damn beast when you floor it!

same with the deckplate mod and cost no more then about 15 bucks to do

I probably should've tried the deckplate, but oh well. I'm very pleased with the results from the Volant, and it looks badass too.

I remember I met up with Nate one day (from Yotatech) and he had done the Deckplate mod and he rev'd his engine and let me hear it, it sounds good but overall the Volant was noticeably louder.

get a cherry bomb vortex muffler its incredible...just cruising its not too loud, its just deep...but when you open it up its nice and throaty...and my shop charged me $80 to install the muffler and a chrome tip INCLUDING price of the tip...so like $30 for install...its simple if u can cut and weld...

Cold air intake wont show a BIG difference, but you will feel it...its more like throttle response than HP...and if you can do a deckplate mod, do that...if not, do CAI but keep it under $200

if he didnt have the ISR done, then thats one reason it would be louder. plus a different intake box and cone filter can make a tiny bit of difference

but the difference between 180 bucks to go with a volant or anything else for a little more sound is kinda worthless imo.

just my opinion though

Thanks for all the info. I need to go by a shop now and price the mufflers. Is the vortex the best from Cherry Bomb? I've also seen the glass and other ones.
