Need Help deciding!

Hello fellow t4r'ers,

I need help deciding on what to look for in my future 4runner. I have secured a $25k loan to buy a car, but I don't want to spend anywhere near that. I currently drive a '91 volvo 240 wagon that I am in love with, but I really want an SUV.

I have really gotten attached to the 3rd gen body style after growing up in Charleston, SC, but after speaking with a yota fanatic, he encouraged me to look at the 4th gens for their off-roading capabilities. I am just coming back from a mountains trip so I am feeling like 4wd is an absolute necessity, even though for right now, it isn't.

I need to know the right trade-off between miles and features. I have preliminarily found these two postings:

2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited

2003 Toyota 4Runner Lifted

I know from a financial standpoint, the $7k model is smarter, with lower miles as well, but I'm fearing that someday I am going to want 4wd capability and be missing out/have to upgrade to a new car to get that functionality. Can someone help me out by telling me how necessary 4wd is, and whether it helps in towing? I currently don't own a boat, but I'd like to get an 18' boat in the next 5 years and have a car that can tow it.

tl;dr What's your opinion of the ideal trade-off between mileage, features, generation, and cost?
