Need help finding a keyless entry remote.

I recently started driving a 1997 4Runner Limited, due to my 2000 Camaro SS being stolen last Tuesday.

I do not have a keyless entry FOB for the vehicle and want to make sure I locate the correct brand/type.

This is the one I am currently looking at:

I have a 97 4runner Limited and it works just fine.

I saw some on ebay for 20-40, used. Of course you need to call the dealership to find out the correct FCC number I believe... I didn't like how the used had broken key rings, so as for me I just went ahead and installed an aftermarket remote start. Starter was 45 bucks, and after buying some wire looms, butt connectors, etc, came out to like 65. But now I can remote start!

I thought the grey one was for 98+ and the black one for 97-? I did look on ebay at the used ones and I felt the same way. People were selling fobs they were broken and not looking so good.
 
Did the FOB end up missing or was there never one? I think the keyless entry on the 96/97 where an add on option, so if it never had the key you bought wont work. You do have the keyless security box under the driver seat right?

I'm guessing it's just missing or was broken or something.
Yes, the box is under the seat and the security light is on the center console. I already tried pairing my GM remote with it and it didn't work, but the pairing mode was working in the car.
 
Anyone else have any suggestions for other brands or types of remotes? If not, I will just buy the one I posted in the first post. Unfortunately the remote has 4 buttons and the 4runner only needs one :P

Ive had the 2 aftermarket ones for my 97 and they will work for a few arm/disarm cycles then stop. Reprogram them and same thing, couple cycles then nada. It sucks but the OEM ones are the only ones that work. I had to order a second one from Ebay similar to this;

Good luck and just bite the bullet on the OEM one if you can. Thats my .02 cents anyhow….

Were you able to return the other ones? I just ordered the aftermarket one I posted from amazon. I guess I will try it and see how it goes and order an OEM used one from ebay if it has issues.

Too bad the new ones are over 80 dollars.
 
I got lazy and never tried to return them. You may have better luck than I did. It seems for me the early 3rd gen fobs are unique enough to be a PITA. I tried the "Remocon" universal and the one that looks like the later 3rd gen one above.

I bought my 1996 generic fob on ebay 3 years ago for $16. Has worked ever since, no issues. The guy I got it from dont sell anymore though.
 
1997 keyless fob

I have a 97 sr5, lost the fob, key chain hole broke my guess.
I have bought and tried 2 different aftermarket fobs, at best I can get the alarm to go off if I hold the lock button in, otherwise wont lock or unlock, which is all I really care about.
Anyone have a link to a seller that is known to work since 2013 to now?

I bought an eBay aftermarket remote for my '97, worked great. I'm looking for one for my '98 now and can't find the same one anymore though.

If you don't mind the minor headache, and I can also help a bit(check one of my threads on Remote start), I put in a remote starter from Crimestopper Rs4-g4(49.99) and it works great. I actually didn't need a bypass, even though all the websites that tell you "Do I need a bypass?" said yes. Didn't realize it until me and my father were looking at the wires and noticing the colors they spoke about were no where to be found. I skipped doing the tach wire, and the timed works great. $10 bucks in butt connectors, 5 dollars in wire looms, and 5 bucks in some heavy gauge wires (so roughly 70 bucks) and I now have remote entry and remote start. I chose this route because of the crappy looking ones. Up to you really, wasn't THAT difficult.. I suggest following more the wiring diagrams than that actual instructions. You cannot screw up wiring when following a diagram unless you're dumb(which I'm not implying you are, just some people are). Many of these instructions are so vague and damn confusing.. Oh and I needed a relay, which I bought off ebay, since autozone and nowhere else had the one I needed. Got it for 1.99, and the guy paid 2.49 shipping... Still not sure how he makes money, but then again not my problem!
