NEED HELP HID High Beam install gone awry

because it's a poor color with a lot of scatter and oncoming traffic will hate you

Actually I find the higher K are less blinding than folks at 5k in a halogen housing.

OP I think it's the combo of safety concern, annoyance to oncoming traffic, and the fact that you did such an amazing job and write up on your stereo maybe some dissapointment on the lighting choice. But to your point, it was cheap...

Expectations go up when you start with some amazing mod out of the gates!

Maybe I spent all my money on the stereo lol? I figured for $39.99 I couldn't lose and certainly significantly better than OEM. The ratings on this kit averaged around 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon.

Question though: why everybody hating on the 8000k?

We're not hating on the 8000K lol. Its just that.....

8000K = Cool Factor: 10 Functionality: 1

TBH: You might as well stick with the OEM Bulbs if you going with 8000K because it put out about the same lumens as the OEM bulbs but different color.

I'm telling you though, way better light output than OEM. And, I figured if they weren't going to cut it to just swap out the bulbs for 5000k or 6000k, they are only about $20 and my ballast setup will work for them fine.

" I figured for $39.99 I couldn't lose "

Except for bulbs that don't fit.

"and certainly significantly better than OEM."

Um no unless you wanted the BroDozer look. The higher the Kelvin the lower your lumens.

Amazon ratings? Did you use that for picking out your audio componentry?

Seriously, the reason I'm criticizing? You are 10/10 on your selection of truck. You are 11/10 for your audio install, AND the writeup. There are several threads on decent HIDs for the projector LB, but you should not put them in a reflector housing.

Welcome and Carry on.

1. You just don't put HID in a halogen reflector.
2. Blue lights are not useable.
3. You can't cheap out on HIDs. They will last for a bit and then fail. Always do. Some last longer, some don't but they will always fail.
4. It's a TRD Pro, go out and use it for what it is in intended for. This isn't a minivan.

Your contributions to this thread suck. But have a great day anyway.

Like I told you on my last response I used to love 8000K. I didn't read any write ups about lumens on the color temperature. I just know from experience with HIDs. 8000K is just not worthy. It doesn't work when you really need it. Can't see anything when it rains!!! Yes go with 5000k or 6000k max nothing over. Plus I like my HIDs to look more like Factory HID as possible. I recommend the 55W over 35W also. It is only $10-$20 more per kit. I use VVME and Innovited they have been working fine for me in the last 3 years.

It looks like the keyways are not the problem. Take that orange o-ring off just to see if the bulb will install. If it does try using the white one off the halogen bulb.

Here's the thing:
If 8000k lights worked better than ~4800k bulbs, that's what all of the oem hid bulbs would be stock. But they're not. The range between 4-5000k is the closest to the accepted value for natural sunlight. This means greater visibility and less strain on your eyes at night, and more importantly to the people driving at you. I had an oncoming asshat the other night with green HIDs and I wanted to run him off the road. Burn temperatures above 5-6000k start getting really irritating to the eyes. Plus the actual light output, in lumens, is reduced.
Not only that, but relying on the cheapest possible Chinese knock-off technology to power one of the most important safety features on your really nice new expensive truck seems a bit careless. I, personally, spent upwards of $1000 buying new housings, retrofitting Acura TL projectors (unfortunately missing from the early 5th gens, but also important for proper HID setup), and installing OEM Denso ballasts from Lexus with oem Phillips 4300k bulbs. The output is phenomenal, I never get high beamed, and I'm not going to look foolish when my knock off ballasts catch fire under my hood. You've got a nice rig man, spend the money, do the research, eat the $30 and buy some real equipment. The retrofit source is a pretty good resource for this stuff.

I will have to try that. Thank you for the suggestion.

"Here’s the thing" no where have I stated nor tried to make the case that 8000k is better than anything. I have stated numerous times that they are WAY better than OEM and have pics on my build thread if you'd like to see them.

This thread isn't even about them which are my low beams. This was a thread to find help in solving a problem that I had.

Now, I did make the statement about everybody hating on my 8000k's however, it was quite tongue in cheek as are many of the statements I make if it sounds the least bit sarcastic there is a 99.99% chance that it is.

Yes, my HID kit was cheap, however it has outstanding reviews and after installing them can personally validate those reviews. The longevity has yet to be determined. And, they come with a 2 Year warranty.

These 8000k's are not as blue as you'd think and I would say they are much easier on on coming traffic than a 4000 to 6000k bulb. All day.

However, I digress to my original point that this thread is not even about my 8000K Kensun HID's. Its not about what spectrum is better than what. Its not about high end vs low end. It's about my 6000K Kensun HID high beams that I'm having trouble fitting in the socket.

Thanks to all who contributed with positive suggestions to my OP and I look forward to seeing if any get the job done. I'm optimistic about the situation.

To those who even make reference to my 8000k low beams... keep it relevant. Not just on this but everywhere else. I get so tired of reading through threads with so much irrelevant garbage posted that has nothing to do with the OP.

It's not irrelevant. It's science. 8000k is less bright and a more irritating color to the human eye than natural sunlight temp. Do what you want dude. Spend 1200 on a rack that you'll use occasionally and 30 bucks on some cheap ass lights that you'll use every day and don't even fit into the housings of your $40000 truck. Don't do any research except what your eyes tell you. Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, they have it all wrong. Make sure to post pics of your hood fire when that sweet 2 year warranty is up on the high voltage gear you're trusting your life to.

I love a nice rack, I don't care how much it costs. :whip2:

Sorry OP, couldn't resist. :tape2:

You are special. And, I'm sure your mother loves you. Now, read the OP and you'll see that every word you wrote here is irrelevant to the OP. I'm sure your comments would fit in well in some other thread in some other time, but this my friend is not that time.

However, because I know you really want to participate here. Any ideas on how I can get that HID to fit in the high beam socket? [emoji4]

I'm sure there are other threads on this topic and feel free to link them. The search function on this forum blows otherwise I probably would have found something.

Actually the Google machine works pretty good when you type in key words like "4Runner, 5th gen, hid install".....

It links directly back to the site.

marshal has a good article about the science about this on his site (here)

While it's technically irrelevant to the OP, and while you do make a point about only running 6000k hi beams, well, I think you know where this is going.
